I don't really care how much it costs.

Xbox One and PC, most gaming is on Xbox One but I play Elite Dangerous on PC and browse web.

I think I want IPS.
I think it needs to be 1080p (for console).

What's the best I can possibly get that will serve this purpose?

Any help here please, there are just too many to choose from

You don't need a 1080p monitor for console gaming. I've got a 1440p monitor and happily play PS4 and Wii U on it.

The thing that really decides it is what resolution do you want to game on when using the PC.

Picture quality must look as good as is possible for Xbox.
I assume monitors don't do non native resolution very well that's why I say 1080p.
I use it at a desk.

So, whats the best I can possibly get ?

A 4k monitor that's the same size as a 1080p should look exactly the same/similar in quality since the pixel scaling is a direct multiple of 1080p. But that probably adds unnecessary expense to something you might use all the time (if you're using 1080p content a lot over using your PC).

If you want a straight up good 1080p monitor then the Asus PB238Q is pretty good for what you want. IPS/1080p. It's 23 inches so I don't know if that's less screen size than you would want.

4k not really practical at the moment but thanks for the tip on that asus, I'll check it out when I get home.
Size of screen, well I think maybe about 25 inch would be ideal for 1080 and my needs, but most are 24 so I'd settle for that.
There are just so many to choose from in this category and I was wondering if any of them are stand out stunners :)

No problem.

I'd also recommend in that case an iiyama XU2590HS-B1. It's 25 inch and IPS. I didn't have that exact monitor, but I had an iiyama and it was brilliant for me.

I'll check that one out too!
Thanks a lot for the recommendations this is just the sort of thing I was after,

Edit: keep 'em coming please folks, I want a concise list to work through before I pull y'old trigger :)

A lot of console games don't even run at 1080, so on a 1440 monitor it's going to look poor :/

I'd go for this

you can also find the version with adjustable stand, it's really good.

Hey you got me thinking now...

I was avoiding 27"@1080p but now as I think about it, may not be a bad idea.
I only really use my PC for browsing and some Elite Dangerous.
And my Xbox would look well on a 27".

I see Iiyama also do both VA and IPS 27" 1080p panels.

Is VA ok for gaming?

I'm now thinking 27" but VA or IPS... decisions decisions

If you don't want a sony motionflow impulse monitor (These have blur reduction/strobe backlight tech), based on what you said you want, I'd try a Benq XL2720z (NOT XL2730Z!). You get motion blur reduction. and with single strobe enabled in service menu, you can enable single strobe for 60hz blur reduction, so you can connect to your console through HDMI.

You also maintain 60hz-144hz blur reduction capability (Version 4 firmware has an extra hidden AMA "low" mode by enabling AMA high AFTER blur reduction is enabled). That's just my suggestion. :)

It's 27" 1080p. Worth it.
