Best NEW game 2008 (no sequels, existing franchises).

Slightly different thread (I hope). Only rule is no sequels or continuations of existing franchises.

In case people find this hard to understand I have listed some

1) Gears of War 2, Fallout 3 (obvious sequels based on number after title)
2) FIFA, PES (obvious sequels based on years 07,08,09 etc).
3) Burnout Paradise (Sequels with unique names but staying in the same basic genre/world as previous games in series).

(I still expect some people to list a sequel, but at least I tried to explain )

Looking across at my Game collection I can only see one title that fits this criteria this year tbh.

Given that 2008's best titles arrived towards the end of 2008 I would have to go for Dead Space, even though the game was horribly repetitive towards the end it was still very well designed. I have never ever seen such a poor year for games - ever.

Funnily enough I said that today. Too many of the big titles have been average. Yet I've played quite a few smaller games that I've really enjoyed this year.

GTA4 was good, but hardy stellar and the same goes for Fable 2, which I did enjoy even though you could play it blindfolded. Not interested in another sodding Mario tbh. Never played MSG series and Gears 2 whilst superb is just one of my better titles of the year. At the end of the year it was a pants year for gaming, justified by the fact that I felt compelled to buy around 4 games for my 360 alone all year.

Pretty much what others have said so rock band, mirrors edge and LBP.

2008 has been the year of disappointment, so many games could have been absolute gems but have just lacked things. There have been some good games but nothing that can even touch call of duty 4.

Whilst Rock Band is technically 'new' it's a continuation of Harmonix's work on the guitar hero franchise...
