Hi folks, discovered a bird sanctuary a few miles ago with a couple of purpose built hides so I'm looking for a reasonably decent telephoto lens for a D7200, all in I can scrape together a maximum of £800 without having to resort to finance. I've been looking at the Sigma 150-600C, are there any alternatives I should be looking at? Cheers.

Tamron 150-600 F5/6.3 is another (pretty damn good) contender, though the last 100mm are not quite as good as the first 350mm. Does need a decent amount of light though, as it's sharpest around F/10.
I have this lens and no real complaints, given its price... does lose a bit of sharpness from 500-600mm as mentioned, and wide open it's not as sharp as the Nikon is wide open.

Don't think 200 is anywhere near long enough for birds.
Nikon 200-500 F/5.6 is very very good... you could probably get one second hand for that.

tamron 150-600mm is the main alternative to the Sigma C version. Some people think the Tamron is slightly better, some prefer the Sigma. As Jono says, the Nikon 200-500 is probably the best of the budget options but might be too much of a stretch. For birds 400mm on crop is really the starting point.

That's what the 2x converter is for. At close range the image won't be far off the bare lens, though I would recommend having a nice background to it which if far enough away will bokeh out nicely.

Even from a conservatory window to a bird feeder just a few feet outside at 600mm, sparrows etc. are still tiny :/
