Looking to get a zoom lens, liking the idea of a 70-300mm but i'm not sure about the performance of some older models which i assume ill be going after due to my budget? At the moment i just dont use my camera enough to justify paying ££££s for a lens.

I'm just looking for something with decent focusing performance, wide aperture and a good zoom. Im so limited with smallers lenses.

Any recommendations would be great :)

For that money the Nikon 55-300mm AF-S VR is hard to beat or alternatively you save up another £50 or so and look for a used Tamron 70-300mm USD VC.

However at this price point you are not going get anything better than an f4-5.6 aperture range, anything with a brighter aperture will cost significantly more money.

The old Nikon 70-300 non-VR is pretty poor, i would avoid in favor of any of the Nikon 55-200/250/300mm options. I would also avoid the sigma Tamron 50-200/250 options, and the sigma 70-300 in all incarnations. The older Tamron 70-300 without VC is poor, but the new Tamron 70-300 with VC (the same as VR) is very good.

What you wont find for that budget is a lens with a fast aperture or speeding AF but here are the "cheap" options if you want a faster aperture:
Nikon 70-200mm f/4.0 (only 1 stop faster at the long end, less at the wider end, and only 200mm).

Sigma/Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8 The Tamron has very good optical properties. there are older versions of the Sigma going cheaper 2nd hand, quality slowly drops off with the older lenses.

Nikon 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D (and AF-S). The AF-D model is still made and sold new. Optically fantastic, build quality is much better than most newer lenses, focus is fast despite being an AF-D design.

And with regards to price, you could buy a lens like the Nikon 80-200mm f/2..8 AF-D if you buy it second hand then you can normally sell it a few years later for a similar price. I had the Nikon 80-200 AF-D, purchased forma high street shop second hand and then sold to the same shop 4 years later and I lost 35 pounds on the sale. Less than 9 quid a year is an absolute bargain!

I've got an ancient AF 70-210 f4-5.6. It's a bit slow to focus and lacks VR, but really happy with the quality of the images I get from it. Thing I really like is it's sharer then I expected wide open.

Bought it intending to do nature and outdoor stuff. But it's got pushed into action doing a bit of gig photography!!!

EDIT: Just check it doesn't rattle, I'm actually on my 2nd one. The first one I bought was defiantly not right!!

I bought the af17 tamron 70-300 non vc a few eeeks ago for my d3100. Reqlly pleased with the speed of the auto focus and picture quality upto 200 mm, after that the picture quality is a kittle soft but still reasonable, just can't crop pics as it loses quality. Cost 99.99 from amazon.
