We're currently on Sky Connect and it's absolutely dreadful. There's little chance of any ISP installing their own equipment in our exchange, so what's my best option? (apart from moving)

During the day I get pings of <50, but in the evening that goes up to <>300, and I'm invariably unable to connect to Steam after 6pm, 7 days.

I'd take a hit during the day, if it meant a better connection in the evening.

Obviously, I'd like the best combination of price, usage and performance. If anyone has any advice I'd be most grateful.

Cheers :)

Move house, but seriously I don't think it will get any better, I am in the same situation with BT, you could complain a lot, thats what I have been doing, but it's doing no good really, I should just use facebook for games, and you will allways be paying for overpriced ultra slow and unusable at peak times broadband as long as you live where you are.

What are your usage requirements? How much data do you use per month, how much of that could be done overnight, how much are you currently paying?

That's a plainly incorrect generalisation. It's perfectly possible to get good performance on a BT Wholesale line, you just need to avoid the bargain basement ISPs.

I moved from UKOnline (essentially Sky Connect) to a Xilo office package, Costs a fair bit more but I get the best performance (both bandwidth and latency) my line can handle 24/7 and a decent enough peak time allowance. Being an office package gets me increased priority at the exchange and double the normal upload speed.

I spent a lot of time looking around and researching, There are no cheap (< £25/month) ISP's that will give you consistently good performance and a decent peak allowance. You get what you pay for. TBH an extra 50p/day is worth it to actually be able to game on my connection in the evening.

It sucks that rural areas are rubbish for the internet, but hey, at least we have fresh air and nice views.

and one more for Zen (providing you can live the download allowances - which are much more than they used to be)

gaming pings are always under 50ms for the UK

50?!
On Xilo in rural Somerset and a long line I get a steady 16ms to BBC and most game servers.

This. I get a steady 11ms to bbc and 17/18 to most UK game servers on a BT line , could probably shave 1 or 2 ms off that if I used wired over wireless.

Can you not get BeThere LLU in your area? They've been brilliant for the last few years we've been with them ADSL2+ connection at 18mbit never slow download speed apart from the odd technical issue which has been corrected pretty quickly and not only that....

Pinging bbc.co.uk [212.58.224.138] with 32 bytes of data:

No need to show off, everyone already knows that Be are fantastic. However they cherry-pick the largest exchanges and have pretty limited coverage even compared to other LLU providers.

Just for everyone's attention, this is my exchange:

I'm really not exaggerating. :(

No cable either. :(

Appreciate all the advice here, I shall use it to make an informed decision. Thanks.

Unfortunately, my view is of Greenock. :(

I recommend Plusnet's gaming lines. I was with them when I wasn't in a LLU area and my ping times were pretty good considering I was on a 45DB line

well I got my MAC code from BT today and will be going with Xilo tomorrow, I think it takes a few days to shift over so will post an update on the service they provide me, as I too am in exactly your situation regarding the exchange
