I dont want a monitor that runs in a widescreen resolution, so im looking for the best gaming monitor that isnt widescreen but must be between 19 - 22"

any suggestions as my hyundai L90D+ feels a little old and considering i play a lot of fast paced FPS i need something a little more responsive

Why no widescreen? With a 22" widescreen compared to a regular 19" you get a better FoV on the horizontal axis and the Iiyama 22" has been measured with no input lag. Sounds like a pretty damn good gaming monitor to me...

Otherwise, I guess a 20" Dell might be a good choice.

Hey mrbios,

I'm curious why you would prefere a non widescreen monitor?

Having used a widescreen myself for three years there is just no way I would want anything else. 1680x1050 is a good res but 1920x1200 is de-facto for just about everything, enough space at this res to display two windows side by side (2xIE/Firefox, MS Word/Excel etc etc) gaming is better, movie watching is better, the list goes on. . . .

Personally I'm suprised they still manufacture non widescreen LCDs?

Look forward to your response :)

Firstly let me say that I agree that 1920x1200 is the current standard...but what do you mean by this part? There's enough space at any res even 1440x900 to display two Excel windows side by side - you just adjust the window size and zoom out slightly. I did this with my Hanns-G and there was plenty of room, as long as you don't have terrible eyesight.

I don't mean just excel, I mean most application, no adjusting or fiddly stuff! :D

1920x1200 allows better multitasking as it is able to show more info at a glance although 1680x1050 is doable it doesn't show as much and involves scrolling from side-to-side.

An example below. . .

run at 1920x1200 myself and tbh don't feel much better off than when i was on my 19" 1280x1024. definately going dual screen :/

Would other people agree with P_A_N_I_C since I about to upgrade from my Samsung 19" 913N (1280x1024) to the BenQ FP241W? Would it be a worthwhile upgrade?

Also, would the response time of the BenQ be an improvement over my 913N which is a TN panel from about 4 years ago?

Two things really, if you want a non-widescreen monitor then the best buy is going to be 2nd hand. I sold a fantastic 19" monitor for £50 because thats pretty much all i could ask for it.

The other thing is if you did get a widescreen monitor that runs at 1680x1050 (20-22") you can run games at 1280x1024 centred, not stretched so that the aspect isn't altrered at all. You just get black borders.

Would be nice is someone could reply to my response time question as well ;).
Hey patience is a virtue :p

I'm no monitor expert but you are asking if a brand new £400+ 24" LCD is gonna be a worthwhile upgrade from ye ancient 19" LCD?

Are you joking? :D
