Got a Netgear DG834G free with my broadband. It's pretty good in terms of solid connection, the wired networking is pretty good.

The wireless is BEYOND useless though. We've tried 4 devices, a belkin pci adaptor, a netgear USB dongle, the on board wireless on my Samsung R20 lappy, and a Netgear PCMCIA card.

all the devices get about the same range, except the USB device. Even the others get a range of about four feet before it disconnects. The usb device gets about 3 inches.

I'm convinced that the problem is the router. It's wireless range is poor. it's not using WEP, it's using WPA-PSK security. My neighbour in an identical house to mine has a rangemax, and he can use his wireless anywhere in his house. I'm going to replace that USB dongle with a PCMCIA card, so that's not an issue.

We're looking at getting a new router, but.. the reviews i check all seem to be good, even for the one i've got, which I KNOW people have probs with

What's the best router, up to about £80, for all three but particularly for wireless. I'm not bothered how many wired ports it has, but it MUST be good for wireless, and non-drop of connection?

Tbh i'm sick to the back teeth of it, and just want it working. :(

EDIT: is the Billion 7300G that ocuk sell any good?

How about a Netgear DG834PN ?

Yeah, that seems good.. how good is it though with no ext aerial? can you connect one?

And how does it cope with other manufacturers adaptors? on the site i am looking at it says you need to use rangemax cards too..

I'm using on board wireless, and a combination of belkin PCMCIA, and Dynamode PCI cards?

I'm a noob to wireless tbh - know my stuff with wired lan but wireless is a (too)slowly clearing fog

EDIT: Hmm the Belkin PCMCIA card i am getting is MIMO (rangemax?) and has a PCI adaptor, but no antenna...

the dynamode PCI cards i have have antennas(on flyleads), but aren't MIMO

which will give me better reception?

grr mimo or not mimo.. fect if i know

There are a few less expensive things you could try before spending major money on a new router.
Have you tried changing the routers wireless channel? as you mentioned your neighbour has wireless his router could be causing interference with your equipment.
What about changing the default antenna for a more powerful model, the DG834G's antenna has a standard RP-SMA connector so you could remove the antenna and replace it with a more powerful Omni-Directional antenna for next to nothing.

yeah we've got a high gain antenna on it, 6 quid. Something like 7dBA which should be more than double the amplitude(3dB=double). no better tbh

I was using a standard Netgear DG834Gt for over 2 years and the wireless siqnal strength have been great all around the house and works for about 100ft up the road..
Have 2 laptops and 3 desktops PC's using it by wireless...(2 desktop PC upstairs & 1 desktop PC downstairs in the house)

I use the WNR854T Rangemax Wireless N. Had no problems with it and get very good signal all round the house.

Oh well thought I'd suggest it anyway. I use a DG834N and it is fantastic, I upgraded from a DG834G because I moved over to Be and the DG834G isn't fully supported on their service apparently.
