Hi guys, just having a look at graphics cards for my upcoming IB build. I would like to replace my 5870. I will mainly be using it with FSX. As I understand it, FSX favours the nvidia cards, so I think I will go for one of those. What would you recommend?

Thanks

NB: I am currently using a shader ver 3 mod to improve fsx performance on the ATI card.

the GTX 480 which recently came back on OCUK site has to be worth a shout for ~£180, they are canny whack faster than HD 5870.

Edit: or even GTX 560 Ti might be a good shout, what sort of board you running? does it have SLI, cause for ~£250 perhaps SLI GTX 560 are in with a shout, offer fantastic performance for the price.

Thanks for the reply. I think it might be good to find a card with 1.5 or 2gb memory as it may help with textures in flight sim.

The 5870 seems to run with fsx quite well with the shader patch on my Q6600 @ 3.2. Would there be a bottleneck if I were to use this initally in my new build? Also, would it be worth waiting for one of these new 'Kepler' cards?

Cheers:).

I jumped from a 5850 to a GTX 570 (didn't pay too much to do it :P) and the difference was decent. However, I'm not sure if there's much point going from a 5870 to a GTX 570.

GTX 570 can be had for around £220-240 if you shop around :)

Im in a similar boat.

1. I would wait before spending £250 on last gen technology. Hopefully the GTX670's and GTX660's will be out soon.

2. The 5870 is still a capable graphics card.

If you really really must buy now, then I suggest stretching to: GTX580, 7870 or a 7950 - anything less wouldn't be worth the amount of money your spending to achieve better frames.

5870>560ti, not going to notice much difference at all.

5870>480/570/6950/70, not going to notice that much difference regards higher fps but, you will achieve better averages and minimums.

As your going to an i5/i7, you will probably see an improvement on your existing 5870, I would try this first before the added expense of another, not much faster gpu.

^^Indeed

I went from a Q9550 to a 2500K last year and it helped a little but ultimately my 5870 was still lacking somewhat for me.
Considered a 570 from my 5870 but the gains for the money spent was not worth it.
I was waiting for the 580 prices to drop but it did not happen quick enough so got a 7950 (big improvement).
The 480 on Overclockers is worth a shout though considering the lowish price :)

Same boat for me, went from q6600 3.6 to i5 4.7 and seen a big improvement but with my 5870 I cant run full AA on Bf3, modded Skyrim with acceptable frames. This is why I think this generation sucks so far, the 7000 series are too costly, the 680 is marketed as high end (renaming rubbish) and same price area (also want a minimum of 3gb vram on new purchase). There isn't anything really to `hop` onto for cheap as there isn't any real performance increase, I find the new cards pretty lack luster for the price. Thankfully its only modded Skyrim and using fxaa only for bf3 everything esle I run full whack so I can wait for more acceptable cards or prices to come.

Ive kept my 5870 overdrive with my i7 running at 3.8ghz
I game at 1920- 1200- 24" monitor
I always in the past use to buy the latest graphics cards but i have had no reason to since my 5870 is doing just fine:eek:
I still cant believe i have it in my system, but coupled with my i7 its doing just dandy:)
