It's been a while since I read up on the budget boys (I'm back in the 300D/350D times). What's the best of the budget DSLR's out at the moment? 400D? A200? D40?

It'll be a few months off but I'm looking at getting back into my general and fashion stuff so any advice would be great.

It all depends on your actual budget.

Most on this site will say either the Canon (1000D, 450D) or Nikon (D40x, D90). I personally is more in favour of Olympus E systems for it's price, size and functionality (E420 or the E620). Not entirely sure about the Sony series but with their Minolta legacy lens series, it is an option to go for them.

A good site for some review would be http://www.cameralabs.com/ http://www.trustedreviews.com/ and http://www.dpreview.com/ for reference.

if you can find 1 (which you should be able to if you hunt a bit) I would still say the A200.
It has however been replaced by the A230 which is smaller, lighter & has a newer, better kit lens - the downside is that a lot of people dislike the new shape of the A230's grip plus it will be £330 with kit 18-55 whereas the A200+18-70 will be ~£250.

I have the Sony A200 and am very very happy with it, it is a bit big and a bit heavy but if you dont mind that it would be a very good starting point. I did consider some others but price had a lot to do with it when I bought it, Before this I was a Canon person but I think the feel of the sony and the way the controls and the menu are laid out feels better to me.

I also have a Sony A200 and I'm very happy with it, does what it says on the tin and you can get tons of old Minolta lenses for it, my favorite being the 50mm f1.7 which can be had for around £50. I don't know what yoyo is on about saying it's big and heavy - it's only big and heavy if you are coming from a super-compact, compared to other DSLR's it's small and light (except for the E-420).

Thanks for the replies, yeh I think the A200 is the way to go, seems everyone raves about them and I remember reviews being more than complimentary. Cheers!

I've not long bought a A200 and it's a great camera, My nephew as a 400D and we both prefer the A200.

I noticed that a big green supermarket were selling them for £247 instore.
