Looking to set up a second bank but would like some recommendations on which has the best online banking portal.

Currently use Halifax and it works pretty well.

Family members are all on hsbc or santander and those online banking portals absolutely suck.

Suggestions please.

Define what sucks about the online portals of HSBC or Santandar (I use them both as well as Barclays, Tesco, TSB and Nationwide) and couldn't say the first two were any better or worse than the others.

They all allow me to check balanaces, make transfers and pay other people, what else do you want to be able to do?

Natwest has an amazing app!

Compared to my Barclays Business banking app and currently have a Halifax CC, the Natwest app is lightyears ahead of them, and anything else i've used (Apart from maybe MBNA, but only do CC I think).

Everything just works as it should and is fast, quick and easy.

The Lloyds portal does what it says on the tin, though they do like to pop a “have you considered this?” page up after logging in everyone in a while.

iOS app is reliable as well.

I also have used Lloyds online for years

The only problem I find is that it doesn't add enough zero's to the end of the number in my account balance :p

First Direct is a good app, Natwest app is good too. My only gripe with Natwest is the transfer limit for a new payee, and if you want to change the payment reference there's a cap of how much you can send too.

I'm with Nationwide and Barclays, out of the two I like how fast Barclay updates on outgoing with paypal and automatically deducts your balance compared to Nationwide. The website and app show it instantly, compared to Nationwide which takes 3-5 days before it update your balance with paypal.
In terms of online banking I much prefer the simplicity of Nationwide as its very straight forward and easy to navigate.

I just opened a second account with BOS the app is pretty good and has everything you need, also had a feature that you can add all your other bank accounts to it so when you open it up you could see your Halifax account/balance as well

....just thought bank of Scotland maybe not many or any of your not in Scotland.

I use all of these too, and also Halifax. They all do what I need in terms of account management - not noticed much difference in functionality between them. Nationwide is the only one of this bunch which still requires a card reader to setup a new payment which is annoying. All the others can do it through some other kind of authorisation (SMS code, email code, app-generated code)

edit: actually, my Barclays login is only for a credit card - I dont use current account services on that

Compared with Halifax, imho, Santander and HSBC are simply overly clunky and not intuitive for quick day to day management. Dont get me wrong, they work, they just seem to make it more painful that it should be.

Another nod for the First Direct app and who are all round superb imo, the Nat-West app is very good but that’s where my praise for them ends and is why I switched to First Direct.

I've banked with quite a few as I like to go around hovering up the bonuses. My experience in the last 2 years for the Apps:

The Best

Starling - by miles!!

Good

Lloyds
Santander (allows you to set up new payments without the password which I find good since I can never remember it)

Average

HSBC
First Direct (their phones service is good but I found everything else fairly mediocre)
Yorkshire Bank
Nationwide

Poor

RBS
Natwest
TSB
Halifax
Tesco

Terrible

Co-op
