i currently use fotopic to post my images, but I would like to have access to something more slick looking, and more importantly, must have a big upload capacity and also i don't want the images compressing, so they can the viewed properly, in their original format

Can you recommed me one? If it's a decent one i'm prepared to pay a monthly charge.

Why not get some hosting and build your own website using something like coppermine? Its fairly straightforward, you just create a folder, drop the images in and coppermine does all of the thumbnail stuff for you.

I am thinking of showcasing my photography eventually - I use DeviantArt which is all good and well, but being free, it does have it's limitations, a major problem being bandwidth. If you create your own personal website - you don't realy need that much expertise, you can then make it look how you want and by paying for a certain amount of bandwidth, you won't have any congestion problems.

definately worth getting your own site, you can get from a few quid to quite expensive, but using things like gallery or coppermine makes it much easier!

from the Coppermine guide

I don't understand any of this stuff - what the hell are they talking about

* CHMOD the "albums" and "include" folders in your Coppermine directory to 755 (or 777, depending on your server config) - this step is very important and must not be overlooked!
* Ensure you have correct information about your database - you need to know the database name as well as the details of a MySQL user account with which Coppermine should connect to the database. The database and the username must already exist, and the user must have access to the relevent database. Coppermine will not create the database for you, but it will create the tables in the database during installation, there is no need for you to add any tables yourself.

If you have your own webspace, then you access it via ftp, or their own config thingy. After uploading the coppermine stuff, you need to 'CHMOD' the folders it tells you to (done by right click in smart ftp). what this means is that these folders can be written to by coppermine. If it isn't allowed to write to them, then it cannot configure itself properly.

Your service provider should provide you with the information about the databases, I made one with a config thing, and coppermine can then put stuff into the database to keep track of what photos you have up and stuff.

I know very little about web stuff, but I manage to get by, and have created www.chriskimmett.co.uk, coppermine with a slightly modified skin (just altered some of the images in paint shop and uploaded them in place of the images that were already there!)

Cheers

Kimmett

you need php, and in some cases a mysql database to run these. chances are your pipex doesn't have them.

i use one called gallery which is super easy to setup here is mine.

look for a webhost with a thing called fantastico, it automatically installs scripts for you and includes both coppermine and gallery.

Completely off topic but I see you have a Savage in your gallery :D

I've tried a few in my time but eventually settled on pixelpost in the end as I just wanted a photoblog rather than a gallery. Coppermine is good though but you tend to find that you and a thousand others can all look the same. I've only found one other that looks like mine atm. Each to their own. :)

I would really advise you buy some hosting space, buy a domain, and get your head stuck in some web development tutorials. This work is definately not as hard as taking a good photo, and the rewards can be an ever growing and evolving site that you can look at with pride.

These days taking an image is only part of the process, how you present it in its digital medium on the internet is the real make or breaker. To many sites look the same, have the same feel by using generic image thumbnail viewers. Do one for yourself and get creative :)
