Best open source e-commerce software?

Looking to start a little venture which may make me a few quid, nothing major hence the need for open source at the moment. If it takes off then I'll be back asking for another one which has more features at a cost obviously.

Ive only ever had a quick play with oscommerce and the only other one Im aware of is zen cart, but Im sure there are more out there.

What exactly are you after, just some software that can create a site with a shopping cart and a pay system, or just a means to take money to sell services?

Cubecart isn't a bad place to start, looks a bit like Zen in my opinion but hey, its free

Will be selling a small range of commercial products online (obviously) and via a salesman.

OScommerce with some tweaking is a pretty well featured system. It's also comparitively lightweight (compared to Magento) but doesn't look as nice out of the box.

Already got a shop on there, abliet through Amazon

but there has been a company approached me about selling flags and banners etc which Im looking into.

This however is completely different.

Thanks for the input, think I'll go with OScommerce and have a play about with it and see if I can get it looking nice.

At work we have started rolling out Magento sites, massively complex but its very feature rich and once it works it does work well. http://www.magentocommerce.com

This is what I looked at when researching options. It appears to be the new big thing in the world of open source e-commerce. It was quite comprehensive.

I did some development work with Magento a year or so back. It was good even then. That would be my first choice. It's very professionally built. If you've ever got your hands dirty with the code underneath osCommerce or Zen Cart you'll see that they are, well, not all that pretty in places... Magento is a much more modern and professional product.

Indeed, I didnt even consider osCommerce or Zencart after looking more closely at them. I didnt know where to start. The logic seemed muddled.

Conversely, Magento might be written with the best intentions, but it does things in incredibly convoluted ways. It is not written with efficiency in mind....
