Hi there

i am after buying an upgrade to my Nvidia gt240 1gb graphics card as it seems to struggle on my World of Warcraft and has become glitchy(im sure its the card and it doesnt play well at medium settings so they are set as low)
Any way to my original titled thread..i was looking at the AFOX Graphics cards but they seem really expensive, does anyone know of any alternatives to these cards..
Links removed by me
It must be a single slot card as i have a Usb 3.0 card in my pc,next to the pci express slot, and if i take that out i will lose Usb 3.0 on my system.

Any help appreciated
cheers

Kev

My system is
acer aspire m3800
coolermaster 480 watt psu
750 gb hdd
intel quad core q8300
Nvidia Gt240 1gb
8gb ddr3 ram
1 dvd writer
1 usb 3.0 card

I've highlighted the biggest performance issue, and it's not the GT240.

I seriously doubt lowering the graphic settings is even giving you much improvement on frame rate (if at all).

Having a faster graphic card might allow you to run at higher graphic settings, but it certainly ain't gonna improve the overall frame rate with the Q8300 at stock clock (particular when WOW doesn't really make good use of beyond a single CPU core).

as others have mentioned, WoW and basically all other MMO's are CPU hungry games.

You'd see a bigger performance boost from upgrading your CPU than you will from a GPU upgrade.

Thanks all for your help.

My budget would be a max spend of £150.

I get 60fps constant on fair settings, but this drops in raids, was just looking for an upgrade to get better rsiding performance.
I'm not sure that I could get a decent processor upgrade for the CPU socket that I have.
My apologies if I seem uneducated on pc systems,I know some basic stuff only, and I do appreciate the people who take their time to reply.
Thanks

Kev.

Use gpuz or msi afterburner/Asus gpu tweak and check out the gt240's usage while gaming.

Does your bios have any overclocking options and would you be comfortable having a go? The Q8300 ought to be able to hit 3ghz with little/no voltage bump. What motherboard do you have?

My motherboard is an Acer EG43M,which i think is a cheap board with Intel chipset P45/P43/G45/G3.

The bios is locked, with no options to change anything.

Would upgrading the processor to a q9400 help any?

many thanks for your help.

will try the programs that have been recommended above.

Hi again
i have run MSI Afterburner and just on normal quests and fighting i am getting these stats from my gt240 gddr3 1gb(at stock settings)

gpu temp 65 degrees
gpu useage 65-84%
fan speed 22-28%
core clock 592 max
shader clock 1440
memory clock 810 max
memory useage 322max

this was on warcraft at fair settings with high view distance,2 x multisampling and 2 x anisotropic texture filtering.

I dont know what this tells me really.

cheers

A sensible question would be to ask what your screen res is? Also your user interface in wow can impact on your performance if you have lots of addons (So if you have not run wow with the vanilla ui and see if that helps).

Overall there are a couple of variables here. But essentially what ever graphic fix is presented here it is only going to be a band aid, a cpu boost would help as well.

I've not played wow in a few years but it used on run well on my e5200 but that was clocked high and I guess it's prob more demanding now.

It indicates cpu limitation, as it can't process and feed enough frames to your gpu. It does mean you might be able to turn some graphical settings up without a negative hit.

You have a few options which will abll require a OS reinstall (the acer windoes install key may not transfer, not sure). A second hand mobo with oc'ing options for your q8300 or a second hand build could get you a first gen core i3/i5 for cheap,
or alternativly a cheap z68 with an sandy/ivy i3 which leaves you free to upgrade and oc later without another reinstall.

Thanks again for informative replies.

So,is there a quad core processor i could put into my 755 socket that would be a better option than either going down the route of a different system or a dual core processor?

I do some video encoding so a quad would be beneficial to me still(without making a new system),however with everyones help,it has stopped me getting a new Graphics card which seems would have been pointless.

Maybe a Q9... series ?

thanks
Kev

Not really worthwhile as the clock speed increase is only 200-300mhz max (for single core WoW engine you want higher core clock) and the higher spec c2Q chips do still sell for good money. So after factoring in selling your q8300 your probably talking in the region of £30-40 for that extra 200-300mhz. But I do believe it would be underwhelming.

Having said that the total cost would be a lot less than changing board/cpu/ram/OS even after factoring selling off the old kit (OS being the biggest individual cost).

Personally, money if spent, is better on a new system. Although in your circumstance it's questionable if it is worth doing for just the 1 game, but an overhaul would be the route i'd choose.

I just reread in your opening post that you thought the gt240 had become glitchy, what sort of glitches are you seeing?

Hi
thanks for the reply, and i think i will have a go at changing my rig in the new year, and will look into what i need then .

However on the glitchy GT240 issue, every now and then i will get my graphics getting jumpy with a squelching sound at the same time, with a big frame rate drop, the play off anything graphical, wether it be my cursor moving or gameplay or video becomes jumpy with a squeel at the same time,i have thought it may have something to do with sound or graphics,if i reboot it usually disappears, only to come back another day.

I originally bought this Zotac card and had the same problem and sent it back, where they said it was faulty after checking it,but this one is doing exactly the same thing(albeit after warranty has ended i think)if indeed it is the card?
So as my original post,i was looking to cut my losses and upgrade and get something where i could run wow faster, thats where all the other discussions came from, which is where it was decided my cpu isnt up to the job anyway.

But any help or advice is very much welcome, its a learning session for me,and much appreciated of all the time people take to respond,so thank you all.

cheers
