Hey guys,

Been looking at building a new PC ready for Christmas, but with the whole HDD price increase, as well as a recent increase in work demand, I think building a PC is out of the question for me.

My question is what is the best choice for me?

I want a decent system for around the £700 mark, capable of running the likes of BF3, Skyrim etc. but also with everyday capabilities too (internet browsing, work, minor video editing etc.)

My only limits really are I would ideally want an i5 processor due to the better gaming performance you get with Intel, at least 8GB of RAM because I make use of Virtual Machines for work purposes and a decent sized HDD, 500GB would be Ok, but 1TB ideally.

If you guys could help I would be very grateful.

I think, even with the HDD price increase, you'd still get more bang for your buck by building your own rig.

For that sort of budget you're looking at something along the lines of a 560ti/6950, coupled with a 2500k in a future-proof, overclocking-friendly motherboard, like the Z68XP. 4GB DDR3 RAM - or even 8 since the price doesn't differ that significantly - and a ~750W PSU for a future, second card. Maybe you'll even fit a watercooled CPU heatsink.

As for the HDDs I think you might thank yourself later if you just buy a 250GB one, even if it's one of those small laptop ones, now, and then expand to a 1-2TB later, when prices have hopefully gone down.

Case and optical drives are up to your taste, so take a look around the shop, or even the Case subsection of the forums, and see what catches your eye.

Anyway this is just a starting point, there's plenty to adjust to your liking and needs.

Have a look at the Titan Triceratop with a 560, prob your best bet

That's the system I've been looking at.

Re. HDD. I have a 500GB external HD, just didn't really wanna use it for my PC storage. It seems that most prebuilt systems haven't been affected too badly by the price increase either. My main problem with this one is the 4GB of RAM, if I could upgrade to 8GB and include a 560Ti, would that be a good idea do we think?

I'd think so, you're much better off getting the Ti version. And like thrifles said, I'm sure they'd fit in another 4Gb of RAM for you.
