Best OS for optimal performance

I have an Alienware M11X R1 and the performance is not great because of the specs. The current OS is Windows 7 but I want to format the drive for optimal performance. Would downgrading to XP or even 98 be worth it? Any other tips on how I get the best from this laptop?

I use the laptop for work (I work as a web developer so will need the Adobe suite, CS3 is fine). I have no intention to use it for gaming.

M11x specs: 250GB HD, Core 2 1.3Ghz, 2GB RAM, GeForce GT 335M, Win7 Home

Agreed

Get 4gb ram in there,
Windows 7 home 64bit (you can use your existing key, no need to pay)
120gb or 250gb SSD, the Samsung EVO are awesome!

How many processes do you have running after the machine has booted up?

A clean Win7 x64 install has around 40-45. Probably just a load a junk on there slowing you down.
