Its a 478?
No, mine's an LGA775 chip. These were the best clocking Prescotts as they ran coolest. Socket 478 chips run hottest of all but you should be able to hit 3.8Ghz, more if you have decent air cooling or water.

I have an Asus AS800 Deluxe motherboard which does have a handy OC tool in the BIOS, basically it will allow you to OC you CPU from 5 - 15%, tried 15% hit 3.8GHZ but sadly crashed before windows could load :(. I did invest in a kickass heatsink a few months back which keeps the pc at a cool 39oC (Idle) and 47oC (With Load, DOOM 3 @ Full Res) could it possible be my Ram etc letting the system down or is the CPU still overheating??

+ 15% is 3.45ghz not 3.8

Don't use automatic things, they are rubbish. Do it manually.

Set the ram to 166mhz so that isnt really a factor, increase the FSB to 220 and give it a try (also lock the the AGP/PCI at 66mhz/33mhz)

Test at 3.3 (220) then try 230, if it becomes unstable at any ppoint try increasing the CPU voltage slightly.
