Guys,

What's the best CPU/Mobo/RAM combo for overclocking at around £250?

Have everything else....current Graphics card is an NVidia PCI-E, RAID not needed.

Cheers

E8400 - 110
ASUS P5Q - 76
4gb OCZ PC2-8500 Platinium - 65

Comes to 251 quid plus p&p.

Actually that's a fricking awesome set-up for any budget.

cob specced it right

plus you can chose between the cpu he specced or a q6600 for the money depending on your usage requirements

Well tbh the IP35 Pro probably goes better with the quad than the P5Q, despite being P35 based.

But I wouldn't touch 2x2gb Ballistix with a barge pole.

Nice spec but you should really change that 8400 for a Q6600.

3.6 ghz quad over a 4ghz dual anyday fo the week.

7 quid for two extra cores

but there's literally no saving?

I'd probably have a G0 Q6600, P5K premium and 4GB of the OCZ 8500 or Gskill 8000. Thats about £270s worth.

Swap the Gskill for Geil ULL and you have the ultimate. Mine does 900Mhz 4-4-4-12 np.

The ocuk bundle only includes 2x1GB.

Personally I'd of went with Cob's choice, for an extra £7 you can change the E8400 for a Q6600, which would still come in a couple of quid cheaper than the ocuk bundle.

"7 quid for two extra cores"

That would be two extra Old-Tech cores that run slower and guzzle more wattage, especially when overclocked!

At a push a second-hand Kentsfield may be a viable option for some performing a lot of predictive tasks but for most users a Wolfdale is gonna be a smart purchase.

It certainly isn't a no-brainer though, needs a bit of grey-matter-muscle to make that choice! :)

Firstly - thanks for all the info and advice guys, spending a few days on these boards has quicky brought me up to speed on the current trends.

My budget has just been finalised and I am now looking at the following...thoughts/critique welcomed.

Asus P5Q Intel P45 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard
OCUK: 76.36
Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 LGA775 'Wolfdale' 3.00GHz (1333FSB) - Retail
OCUK: 110.44
GeIL 4GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GB24GB8500C5DC)
OCUK: 82.24

Yes...it's Cob's build with different RAM, cheers man!

Cheers again
