Best Overclocker...on a budget.

I really see no sense in getting the Geil when the OCZ is nearly 20 quid cheaper. That 20 quid would get you an E8500.

But, either way you'll be more than happy :)

Fair point.

If this system is going to be around for a while you should really get a Q6600.

Chances are it will be around for 9 - 12 months, then I will do a full rebuild around the Nehalem platform.

This is why I am trying to keep it cheap, I may just stick with the E8400 an save 20 quid...it might be a good idea with the credit crunch ;)

Thanks again, ordering will be happening next week - I may change my mind dending on what is in the weekly offers.

Guys,

I got the kit today, got home and stuck it all together, powers on fine, post's fine, memory check's fine, identifies CD/DVD driver fine, identifies S-ATA HD's fine...try to install Windows XP Pro and get a Stop 7E error after all components have loaded and Windows tries to start.

Have tried booting off a couple of Linux Disks, OLD Knoppix, DSL and Fedora, which all fail - BIOS error on kernel boot.

Have swapped the memory around, no joy, used each stick seperatley, no joy, remoe all bar one hard drive, no joy.

I assume it's not the CPU, I've kind of ruled out the RAM, don't think the HD's are the problem...so have got to the following.

Bad Windows disk...though doubtful as I would have expected the Nix Disks to work.

Bad Mobo....please god no!

Bios issue...possible.

Edit: Just tried to load Xubuntu and got a tty error

Graphics Card...a definate possiblity.

Any points, suggestions, comments appreciated...

Cheers

You'll probably find that the linux disks aren't booting because the kernal hasn't been updated to recognise P45 yet (quite a few people have reported the issue). But the XP disk should work ok if the disk is fine.

Does it always stop at the same point? make sure your memory is set to about 2.05v.

Cheers Cob,

Thanks for the advice RE: Nix, is somewhat reassuring.

I dug out a Vista trial disk and it seems to be working, if it installs then I'll burn a more recent distro and see how that goes.

Yes, always fails at the same point, is an old disk from my last system...kind of hopeful that is the reason.

Fingers crossed it sounds like a duff XP disk :)

I think the P45 & linux issue can be sorted by switching the hard drives to ACHI. Tho that may only affect the newer distros.

Your linux problems may be solved by setting the hard disk to AHCI mode in the bios. I had problems putting on Ubuntu 8.04, which gave the error message PCI BIOS BUG, and then would not install. When you enable AHCI, it still gives the message, but installs fine.

EDIT: Actually, i was beaten to this by cob (will teach me to read all posts properly), but i can confirm that it does work.
