Baiscally i am a beginner with photoshop and want to learn how to use it to a high standard, there are so many tutorials on the sticky and wondered if someone could point be in the direction of the best one. I am primarily looking at photohshop for graphics design

just read a basic one and then mess about.

be sure to have a clear idea of what you want when your little project is finished.

dont go in it with no idea what you want at the end.

someone at col i know is mint at it, i got shown the basics, and just dabbled a bit after that

Some basics you might want to know are:

Selection Tools
Type Tool
Pen Tool
Masks
Adjustment Layers

Also, if while you are doing a project you want to know how to do something, find a tutorial on it.

You can also go to www.photoshoptv.com and there are plenty of video podcasts from 3 guys from NAPP - these guys are pros! They show you loads of techniques and tutorials that will help you get better with Photoshop.

If you really want to get good you can also buy a photoshop book. Some of the best you can buy are by Scott Kelby - I have two and I recommend them :)

Hello
I bought a digital camera mag at the weekend 'cos it had a PS tutorial CD (haven't tried it out yet)
Some of the online tutorials are good, but most I find seem to written by people who knew what they were doing but are unable communicate what they mean.
I've only managed to learn a few tricks in PS, the last one I learnt was making creative cropped borders using quickmask - very powerful trick to learn, which I actually picked up from a Gimp tutorial.
As for books, sometimes you can get an older version PS book in a bookend shop for less than a £10'er.
Cheers
