My girlfriend and I are moving house this year, we need to liquidate as much cash as possible to get our deposit reduced to improve our mortgage, we both have wedding rings and she has her engagement ring (from our previous marriages).

We have had the rings valued by a reputable jeweller friend of the family but have no real idea the best way to go about selling these.

Has anyone had to do this in the past and can recommend someone reputable?

Many second-hand jewelers will sell on your behalf, for a commission. Just need to phone some up

He only deals in new things, he doesnt buy (he's quite an exclusive high end kind of guy).

I'd be very surprised if he can't put you in touch with a couple of people at least though, I've got a friend who does handmade jewellery and it seems the sort of business where it's all about connections of one type or another.

My girlfriend sold her sister's ex engagement ring to a local jewellers. Just go somewhere where there's a handful of independent shops and get quotes from all of them.

Don't bother with a generic pawn brokers or cash4gold type place but also be aware that engagement rings aren't the best re-sell. A jewellers may even buy it to melt it down and re-cast it as something else.

Worst "I robbed someones house and need to get rid of the evidence" thread ever! :p

Perhaps try and sell through a reputable shop? They will charge for the service though. That said, you could always give cash4gold a call and see what they say. From what you have said, you must have at least a tenners worth there! If you threw in your smart phones you might get £12 :D

Could you sell it on Fleabay?

He possibly could, he's a friend of my dad though and I felt he did us a favour just by checking them out for me.

Pawn Brokers?

Dont want to be ripped off.

Possibly, its something we would consider.

As for value, about £3k second hand for all of the rings, we did go round a few local jewellers who would only buy them if they valued them themselves, who wanted a fee for doing so - so a bit pointless.

Unless they are amazingly pimp rings you won't get much money for them at all, unless you luck out on ebay. Generally, anyone that would buy them off of you just wants the value of the gold/ metal. I pawned my fiance's old engagement ring (from a previous engagement) and got £80ish for an 18 carrot white gold ring with tanzanite stone. I got 4 quotes and this was the best.

If you get more than £500 for all 3 rings I'll be amazed.

The dead weight value of the stones and gold in the rings are 3k. If we got over 2 for them we would be happy enough.

what's wrong with GD, not a single cash4gold suggestion yet.

See post #9 :)

Also to the OP - I would try a variety of jewellers and just see what they can offer you. Clearly they will offer a reduced price as they want to make a profit, but that is the kind of hit you will have to take for a quick sale.

Selling to a pawn shop would see you lose out a lot more in my opinion.

Yeah, wont be going to a pawn shop - i guess we may take a day and trawl a few jewellers to see what they can offer.

Perhaps take a day to trawl the Paisley Jewellery Quarter and see what you come up with? Might be worth it because you might get lucky....

Its a tough position to be in. Could you pay a jeweller to melt them down for you and just sell the gold/stones on as raw materials? (I have no idea if this is possible, it was just an idea!).
