best poker website

I'm in the latter of these two types of people, thus my scepticism :)

Open 10 sessions of double or nothing for $1, play extremely passive tight (only playing with exceptional cards). Survive as the good half of winners (normally 10 to a table, so you only need to come 5th), collect winnings and go again.

Extremely boring and ultimately not terribly profitable until higher table levels, when you start playing against people who actually do it for a living. Then it gets harder.

One of my friends does the whole poker for a living thing, he does very well. He's a doctor in maths and physics and has nearly every hand odd ingrained in his brain, and just plays to those odds. I think he makes a couple of grand a month, mainly playing tournaments etc and occasionally getting a big win.

Personally I don't think I could play poker without the constant rush of the gamble/bluff, It'd turn from something fun into a chore.

Even the $5 double or nothing tables are reasonably easy to play passively. $10 upwards there will be too many players taking advantage of a passive player.

Make money? Online poker?

Something's wrong here.

Are you serious?

Im lucky enough to be friends with a few professional poker players who make a VERY VERY comfortable living playing online poker. I mean the kind of comfort where they can lose 60k in a day, and it not be too much of a concern.

It is very possible to make not only money online, but a decent living. However, please dont let this fool you into thinking that youre guaranteed to make money playing poker. There have got to be a good 90% of people losing money. Its the 10% who are making it, and for very good reasons. Firstly, the only people who I know who make money at poker, dont do so by playing one or two tables at a time. They are amazingly talented individuals, who can play 12-20 different tables at once. Not just enabling them to win more often, but to level out any loses with wins on other tables. Then there is how much you play with. To win more money at poker, who have to bet with more money, which means you have to be able to afford to lose more money. Everyone that I know that makes money at poker, made a risk by starting out with a few thousand, and playing higher stakes tables. There is not a lot of money to win in the smaller stakes tables. For any money you do win, many see the time dedicated to winning such a small amount isnt worth it. Then there is the fact that you have to be GOOD, which is standard, but its just so much how good you are, but who good you are at multitasking between various tables, and knowing how internet poker works. Playing tight Ive heard is the way forward. If you cant play more than one table, and dont have a decent bankroll, I wouldnt put too much thought into making a lot of money playing poker online. Me personally, Ive tried playing two tables at once, and failed dismally...so I dont try any more...I just enjoying playing a little, live.

Just my two cents.

Good post Detroit_Waves.

1) Have an appropriate bankroll
2) Level of skill
3) Time
4) Ability to play for many hours per day grinding it out on multiple tables

If you're not at a level where you can do well at say $50 cash table(s) then you should practise a lot more before you take the plunge.

Personally, I never liked to play more than a few tables at a time because it became too much: respect to those who play many more than that.

I played at a good level on cash tables, but gave up after realising that I wasn't good enough to make serious money out of it and that I didn't have the time/ adequate bankroll to make a go of it.

I would be extremely careful.

I've used, partypoker, 888, pokerstars, ladbrokes, billhill and pkr.

Pkr was the worst followed by ladbrokes. Best was pokerstars.

Lowest player skill I've seen is at skypoker. Problem is the reason for that is that they mainly cater to turbo, short stack tourny players. Gets very quick to allin/fold tactics.

Are you serious?

I was being serious, but as is my prerogative, I was just using my own experience.

I know of people who have lost thousands (and perhpas hundreds of thousands) playing online poker.

They may well be fools, and in fact some of them are, but I would urge anyone to approach with caution given what I've seen happen.

I honestly believe that anyone can earn a decent bit of cash on the small stake poker tables with a bit of effort.

Jimmeh, the reason most don't is because when you play poker for fun, you'll lose. If you play it to make money, don't expect it to be fun. So many players log on for a couple of hours, deposit £20 and throw it about hoping to win a big pot and most of the time lose the lot.

People need to be willing to learn a bit about the game and spend time afterwards analysing their hand histories and posting them online for constructive feedback. You then need the discipline to stick to what you've learnt and the ability to understand that even losing a hand is a good thing as long as YOU played it correctly. Throw in some good bankroll management and game selection skills and you should do alright because 9/10 players on the small stakes tables don't do any of the above.

Kind of liking the Merge network atm. Software isn't that far behind Tilt and Stars but the games are miles softer, and it's also nice knowing that your privacy isn't invaded by pokertableratings.com.

lol OP has much to learn

earning a living playing poker is not fun, its just like any other job... it takes time, dedication.

you can learn the game itself in a few hours, but you cant go in with £50 and come out with £1,000 every time even if you consider yourself a good player... if this is what you think then dont bother even starting.

First thing you need to do if you want to earn money playing poker (anything more than $10 a day on average) is spend about 100+ hours reading everything you can on the game, strategies, hand reviews, tips, etc :)

good luck

oh and dont forget rakeback :p

PokerStars, I tried another site and then went straight back. It's the volume of games that did it for me.

Anyone else prefer SNGs over cash tables? I don't really enjoy cash tables at all.
