13.3" 1280x800 LED backlit screen
Thinner than the Macbook Air
2GB DDR2

Sony TZ would be my "money no object" choice.

Thinkpad x61 would be my "thinking mans" choice.

or Sony TZ?

Nope, horrible performance compared to the Lenovo. Thinkpads are probably the way to go, plenty alternatives but none really as good...

Macbook Air, has to be mentioned but battery life is a concern, as is connectivity.

Toshiba R500 is very mobile and tougher than it feels but it feels very fragile

Dell D430 is a good laptop but is due for replacement.

Sony I just don't trust so I won't even attempt to be objective....

HP 2530p is new and would be on my list but it's a little heavier...

great picks. I need a few choices to put forward anyway as i dont get the final say - have to be a little flexible unfortunately

Sony Z or Lenovo X301 if I need a dvd drive, Sony Z has the better screen but the Lenovo X301 has better build quality and support.

Envy 133 if I dont need one and dont mine waiting awhile to get one as they havent even shipped a single unit yet due to chassis problems.

A Lenovo X series would be my choice, use the X60 and X61 all the time so can vouch for them, the X3xx series does look cracking though :) Love the design and build of the Lenovos as well, a bit old school but very well built imho.

The small Dell Latitudes like the 430 are also pretty good.

How about a Dell XPS M1330?

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Processor T9500 (2.60 GHz, 800 MHz FSB, 6 MB L2 cache)
Genuine Windows Vista® Ultimate SP1 - English

Tuxedo Black & 0.3 mega pixel Camera for White-LED Display
13.3" UltraSharp™ WXGA (1280x800) White-LED Display (300 nits) with TrueLife™

500GB Serial ATA (5400RPM) Hard Drive
128MB nVidia® GeForce® 8400M GS
Fixed 8x DVD+/-RW Slim Slot Load Drive, including SW
