But it is 3 x faster !!!

Is a stonking buy for only £67 ... not quite with the GT but in a different class to the 8600

This is a great card for £65. It is almost as fast as an 8800GT. Even this will play all current games and save you some money. 1280x1024 is easy for all of the cards suggested in this and the above posts.

I can tell you that even on a board limited to 2.67Ghz on my C2D, and the PCI-E 1 slot being limited to only 4x, my 3870 runs GRID flawlessly with full gfx options turned on at 1280*1024, COD4 runs fantastically and every game I have runs great, with the exception of Crysis, which i have to compromise on if I want good frame rate (I still play on high and it is very playable btw, just could be a little faster at times).
