Hey all, just firing up some kit to fold over winter.

Dual Quad core xeon server going flat out 12k ppd seeing as 95% of the time it will be idle at work. Yes its my own server so no problems with IT dept as i am the IT dept :D

I have the urge to build a folder. is GPU still the way forward?

All gonna be built with 2nd hand kit where possible.

how much will you be willing to part with ?

do you already have something set up that you can dump a gpu or 2? into or do you need to build a full set-up

been able to get into the members market should get you a bargin or 2

Im currently on the Mac OSX bandwagon with my Mac mini 2.3 i7 16gb.

I have my old fractal define design matx so am looking to kit it out.

Another thought passed my mind was run a 16-32core AMD server at work as power is FREE :)

The last time i was folding was about 2 years ago with a 2600k under water with 2 x gtx295s :)

Oh the HEAT LOL!

48/64 core AMD servers are relatively cheap (Start at around £1k) produce good ppd and are available;)

300kppd + at 500W ish.

Would one find those on that auction site?

or ask baba if he still has any hes offloading ;)

hes currently not folding on any but I know he folds on his intel 4p when working and he has 2/3? amd 4ps aswell!!!!!!!

Are these 4p rigs still economical for projects other than folding? I've never done FAH, but as I understand it the credit is not linear as you get bonus points for returning WUs more quickly? In projects where credit is given purely for amount of work done (ie boinc) would these 4p rigs still be more cost effective that a bunch of single CPU systems?

It all depends what boinc project you are doing, if you do one of the cpu only projects like CPDN as I do then they are great.

They just cant compete against GPU on projects that are optimised for them.

Yeah it would be for CPU only boinc projects. I'm getting a bit bored of milkyway and thinking of retiring my 6990s soon. So I'm thinking about replacement hardware/projects. Most of the projects on dc vault where we are ranked lowest are cpu only so I was wondering if one of these 4p rigs would be a good option.

Any ideas on PPD with dual L5640s 24 threads and 48gb ram along with a GTX670FTW?

from another forum.

my dual hex core L5640's will get 53k PPD

along with a gtx670 is over 100k PPD ( should be 120k ppd? ish ) although an amd 7970 is capable of 100k on its own, but didn't you say works paid for it? so its a win win situation lol

OoO Shiny EVGA 670 has arrived :)

24thread madness with arrive tomorrow hopefully. was due today mind you :( I wanted to play lol

Basically it was 2nd hand off eBay.

Was £800 but I'm not paying for it. More as a gift. Family business ya see ;) saves the vat and the whole value can go against our bottom line.
