I have just had a 40 sq m deck plus steps and railing built. I want to protect it as best as I can.

What is the best preservative? Best application method?

If you want to keep the existing finish, then I've used Sika clear wood preserver before. It's very easy to apply by painting on. It's water based so it's almost like painting on water.

I use "No Nonsense" decking oil from Screwfix.
It's a lot more expensive than it used to be though, so keep an eye out for when they go on discount.

We left our decking to weather and silver slightly before applying it's first coat of oil.

Liberon decking oil. Usually a couple of coats or until the timber wont absorb anymore oil. Its a yearly job.
