What would you educated and opinionated motor gurus consider to be the best engine currently in production today? Both petrol and diesel.

Also, what would you consider to be the best engine ever produced (if it is out of production)?

I saw a E92 diesel zoom past on the motorway last night and it got me wondering how much different that engine would feel compared to my E46 petrol, my train of thought then continued onto the query above.

I myself have no knowledge of engines and therefore I can't/won't give an opinion but I am genuinley intruiged as to what the schooled thought would be, and on what criteria your opinion would be based upon?

EDIT: I suppose "best" is vague, but if you suggest the engine you regard as being a better overall than any other engine for whatever reason(s) then please state why/how you came to that conclusion.

The engine in the McLaren MP4-12C.
A bespoke McLaren ‘M838T’ 3.8-liter, V8 twin-turbo engine offering 600bhp, 433lb-ft of torque, 0-60mph in just over 3 sec and a top speed of more than 200mph. It delivers the highest horsepower-to-CO2 ratio of any car on the market today with an internal combustion engine ... and that includes petrol and diesel hybrids.

My vote would have to go for the Rolls-Royce merlin engine :)
YES! Such an awesome sound!

What if you live on a hill and need to tow anything?

ZOMG!!!!

I live on a slight hill, but as im only half way up, i have enough torques to make it onto my driveway :D

I dont buy all this bull about lack of torque. sure, it doesnt pull as well as my mates T5 volvo, but put it in 6th gear at 30mph, and it will pull quite happily. Ive owned 3 type r I-VTECs and now the S2000, and ive never been unhappy with any of them, but i guess I just like the power delivery of a VTEC. Lack of torque for me has never been an issue :)

the best every day engine is probably the VAG 2.0 turbo for price, economy, performance, reliability?

is the s2000 still in production?

Except the economy that VAG claim and the real-world mpg are WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY off :)

Other than that, it is a fantastic engine.

I think putting a turbo on a smaller engine was a great idea, so maybe VWs 1.4tsi?

That ain't a new idea though, that's been around since the 80s :)

The TSI isn't only turbocharged though, it's supercharged as well - This too being nothing new, a technology that's been around since probably the 30s, not seen on cars until the 80s (well, on manufacturer vehicles anyway). A very well executed design though, by all accounts :)

For petrol, GM's LS V8 would have to be on my shortlist for favorite current production petrol engine, probably the LS3 or LS7.
