Best PS2 games by category?

A couple of weeks ago I bought a PS2, having never owned one before. And given the vast number of titles available, I'd like people to recommend some of the best please!

So please recommend games in each of these categories (you can list as many as you like, not necessarily just one each). :cool:

I'm in about the same boat. I got a ps2 for GTA:SA, completed it, traded it in. But I got one a few months back and haven't used it yet. I've got MGS2 and MGS3 and never switched it on.

For 3rd person action games you have to play MGS 2 and 3, and God of War 1 and 2. Completely different games but all great.

Gran Turismo 3. I think 4 isn't as good, not sure why, just seems like it hasn't had the love and care that A-Spec had.

That's what I can think of off the top of my head. Don't forget that if you are willing to drop to PsOne games, you will open up some classic games to yourself.

Crash Tag Team Racing for the PSOne was a great Mario Kart clone... can't think of any memorable PS2 ones off the top of my head.

I'd recommend Resident Evil Code Veronica for Survival Horror, if you like your old school resi games. Tekken 5 for 3d fighter.

SNK Vs Capcom 2

Though, I think that MVC2 is at its worst on the PS2 - I think the DC / XBOX versions were the best, but I'd only played the PS2 version briefly.
