Hi there, soon after release i had a ps3 which i installed Linux Yellow Dog on. Due to lack of any decent games to play, i decided to sell, which was last year.

I have taken the plunge again, and want to install linux again, does anybody know which distro is the best? I've seen online people installing ubuntu 7.10. Is this the best one to install. Thanks tom.

could anyone explain how installing another linux will effect playstation updates??? would they still work?

I still use the default PS3 os, can anyone explain why installing a different one is better ?:o

Installing a second OS does not overwrite the PS3 game OS, it effectively Dual Boots like a PC would, so you can either load the PS3 OS and play games, otr Load the Second OS and use your PS3 to browse the Internet or whatever Linux user do on a PS3...

Ive got Ubunto 'Gusty Gibbon' 7.10 on mine... not sure why though lol, had to try it though.

"gusty gibbon" some name :p

I would love to dual boot! but im just so confused which ones the best, there are so many!!

is there one thats stable  aaaand can play or decode HD movie and all movie formats?

Thanks:)

If you install something like Ubuntu, can you use a built-in media player to play all the videos with codecs that the PS3 doesn't support?
Yes. VLC handles just about everything.

As to HD content, you'll have to get feedback from somebody who's used Linux on a PS3. I'm not sure that Sony's hypervisor makes such computationally-intense operations feasible.

yeh, ubuntu 7.10 and 8.04 alpha biulds are super easy to get codecs installed, basically click a file u want to play, it loads Totem by default, a pop-up appeasr asking if you wanna download a codec inorder to watch you file. job done

HD movies, by that do you mean HD-DVD and blu-ray? IF so, linux atm is abit crippled, it can't get round the HDCP or DRM issues atm (cant remember wicth it is) the only way you can play it is to burn an iso to ** HDD.

I have not tested HD playback on a linux distro on a ps3 either. Does it matter anyway seeing as ps3 plays blu-ray anyway?
