Best push-up stands - Standard or the "twisting" kind?

Hey,

As thread title really - I always feel my wrists are wrecked from doing push ups and have seen these stands available, firstly are they a useful piece of equipment or are they a gimmick?

If not, is it best to stick with the standard ones, or are the twisting ones also a gimmick - I don't want to be dragged in by advertising or anything and know you guys know the real deal with these things.

don't know if this may help, but at the gym I use the kettlebells sometimes for pushups, let you get nice and low. Maybe that's a good idea, that way you have kettlebells to play with also! :D

Good suggestion.

Personally just buy some bog standard stands and then rotate them for each set as it'll have a similar effect. If you can get some stands (or kettlebells) I'm sure you can fashion something to allow them to spin yourself. Making your own ballbearing system between two peices of wood would be quite simple if you have a router. Albeit time consuming.

Personally I don't think theres much extra benefit to justify the extra cost.

Edit: Kappa you just reminded me I've got some KB's waiting for me at home :D

Do them on your fists, I break some glass and spread it on the floor first! Only joking, doing them on your fists isn't as hard as it sounds and it strenghtens your wrists too.
The ground does need to be yielding, carpet is ideal.

Yeah, doing them on a hard surface KILLS your knuckles!
 
If you want to kill two birds with one stone get an iron gym or something similar, that is what i use and it's pretty good for push-ups.

It used to strain my wrists a little in the beginning but i got used to it pretty quickly, and i mostly use the iron gym for going deeper although if i were to buy some now just for push-ups i would probably get something simple like these, i have used a similar design and it's pretty much spot on in the comfort department.

I do mine off dumbbells, I find I keep much better form as I'm constantly concentrating on not rolling them out. Also with two light dumbbells I find it possible to mimic the twisting motion during the push-up movement.
 
How many do you do?

I used to get this a bit but now my wrists toughened up a lot since then and any pain i was getting just went away :cool:
 
Ive got an iron gym. Brought it for a chin up bar and the door frames in my house cant fit the screw on bars. But its quite good for pushups, would recommend it.

This is what I'm hoping will happen with mine as my left wrist is giving me hell and doing verticle push ups is a right mare at the moment :(

I have slacked of late but its usually a 50 morning / 50 evening thing before and after work - think I will invest in some of the standard type, the twisting ones seem a bit of a gimmick (plus money is tight right now!)

What's the value of push ups when you're already doing bench press once / twice a week? Or is it just done for all round fitness and just "cause you can"?

depending on how you workout its great for 'finishing off' after doing bench/chest exercises.

not THAT kinda finishing off, you dirty mofos
