Best QUAD Core2 with Virtualisation for GA-965P-DS3P 2.0?

It turns out you're completely right, I just spoke to my 77 year old grandfather and he was talking about how he loves being able to run Windows 7 x64 in a VM on his Windows Vista x64 host for evaluation purposes. Then there's my teenage sister, she's got an entire virtual domain complete with Exchange and System Center.

How could I have not realised that virtual machines are the bread and butter of home computing?
Most people on this forum aren't exactly the type of users that your 77 year old grandafther and younger sister are though...

You're creating an argument here for no reason. The OP explicitly asked about VMs in his question, so what's the point you're making?

Firstly, I wasn't directing my comment at the OP, so your statement has no justification. Secondly, most home users aren't members of this forum. The fact that a lot of people on this forum use virtualisation technologies has no relevance to the question I answered.

What's your point? A lot of non-professional users run VMs now and then - I myself have dabbled with them a few times. Just because you don't use 'em doesn't mean VT isn't important.
I never said that VT was unimportant. I said that it's not relevant for the average user as they don't run VMs - the closest they'll likely get is using Windows XP mode in Windows 7.

Thank you for your insightful input.

I currently have an E6300 in there which is a hand-me-down from my workstation, and I think I've reached the capacity of the dual core 1.86GHz goodness it offers.

i think the OPs dual core is plenty powerful enough already. i guess it depends what his server is doing though.
Hey plonka2000,

a Quad-Core makes some sense for someone who uses a lot of Virtual Machines but you really should get that E6300 overclocked to at least 2.8GHz, that is a very healthy +50% speedup on the CPU/FSB-MHz right there!

Hi everyone,

Just got back to this thread after spending the weekend working in a datacenter and thanks for all your replies.

The reason I was looking to upgrade the CPU was because I really didnt fancy the idea of overclocking my server, for the sake of stability, file consistency and error-checking due to my RAID array being a Linux software array.

I'm not against overclocking, but I just wish to avoid it on my server if possible really.

A few people have also commented that I should use a Q9550 or Q8400 which I'd like to but I originally raised the point that they show as 'Not Supported' on the Gigabyte list of CPU's for the GA-965P-DS3P v2.0 mobo.

Should I conclude that a Q6600 is my best option, even though I would have liked a Q8400 because of the efficiency and architectural improvements?

Thanks

you can't run 64bit guests on a 32bit host. to run a 64bit guest you need a 64bit host OS and hardware VT.

running 32bit guests on 32/64bit systems without hardware VT is just fine.

I can :p

Leopard isn't really 64 bit and im running 64 bit W7 using VT just fine on both my MBP and MP :)

Its more useful for me because I work in OS X so being able to Virtualise windows 7 is very useful.

Leopard runs a 64-bit kernel, hence the ability to run 64-bit guests.
There are lots of parts of OSX leopard that are 32-bit though.

OSX is basically just BSD with a fancy fisher-price interface anyway. ;)

Anyhow, so does anyone know if I have any VT-enabled options above a Q6600?
I cant find anything in the supported CPU list.
