Vlc has a bunch of options with video outputs and i remember back when i used to use ffdshow and media player classic that some kind of directx setting was best, might of been 3d, vlc has two though and some other options, so i was just wondering what the best quality settings were?

Thanks! :)

sorry if i come across as a bit naff on this, but wouldnt the quality come down to your systems specs? Maybe i've got the wrong idea here
No. :p The quality comes down to what sort of renderer/scaler/filters the software uses.

If the quality was good with MPC, why dont you just use MPC?

MPC-HC my player of choice, I don't use anything else.

I would like to know what the best video output is, heard opengl might have better colours but i remember directx or directx 3d as being the most popular, im not sure what vlc uses by default, i suspect its overlay which is why i want to know what to check or uncheck and what output to select.

Not used mpc for a long time, messing around with that and ffdshow was too much hassle after reinstalls etc.

Well from default disable YUV->RGB conversion, god knows why it's on by default, and you'll find colours improve :)

are you on Vista or windows 7? if so you are probably best off with MPC-HC set the output renderer to EVR mode as this will give you the greatest quality and speed. This is the best quality renderer but afaik isnt supported in vlc yet.

Does that just turn off hardware acceleration of the conversion or the conversion itself?

Also if i have directx 3d on should i turn off overlay acceleration?

Im running xp and so far i only made the switch to directx 3d, not sure what's best though as most answers haven't really been helpful (no offence), if another player is really that much better id like to know why and not just have people mentioning their favourite, thanks though. :)

You don't need to as WMP is using the correct output by default anyway (it uses your GFX card's control panel settings which will always be correct out of the box).

MPC-HC is different, contains everything out the box so you don't need a single external filter unless you want to do advanced tweaking. Miles better than VLC, miles and miles.

While i agree that MPC-HC is the way to go, i think that technically what you are saying about MPC-HC is also true of VLC. Both VLC and MPC-HC use libavcodec based internal decoders (+ some others) and so neither need external codecs.

I was saying that MPC-HC is different to MPC which he had used. It was only in HC that a lot more decoders were added.
