i have a haf 922 case, full of holes so very noisy. i sleep about 2 foot from it and all i can hear is the cpu cooler(zalman aeroflot). i can even hear it when im in other rooms!
could someone advise me as to the quietest cpu cooling option please?
i dont care at all about noise at load its when the pc is idling and im trying to sleep that i want quiet as possible.
currently have a q6600 775 socket but plan to go ivybride i5 sometime soon.
not to fussy on cost sub £100 preferably though
many thanks

The noctua or phanteks are supposed to be near silent or a closed water loop such as the h80 but the pumps can be noisy if you get a bad one

CLC is noisier then AC

Most good coolers come with mounts for most all CPUs so should be no problem ugrading.

Can vouch for both Noctua and Phanteks customer support being excellent, but don't rule out other coolers. K2, SB-E, etc. are equally as good.. then there are the single core coolers in same league.

helios is correct.

Have used Noctua, Phanteks and Thermalright and I can't hear any of them at idle from a meter away.

That said, I'm running Thermalright TY-140 fans on my Phanteks. :D

thanks for the quick answers. is there any partiicular model thats more quiet at idle? there are quite a few to choose from. im more interested in peace than overall performance:D

The phanteks fans are far from quiet, even undervolted. Also due to the idiotic mounting clips, only a handful of fans will fit the cooler. Thermalright fans are the quietest and perform better than Noctua ime.

Gentle Typhoons are the best I've tried, Noctuas and Apaches are quiet but they often don't shift a whole lot of air and manufacturers claims for CFM for their fans are often pure fiction. It's essentially a compromise: quietness vs. efficiency. GT's have the best noise/efficiency ratio I've found. Their only downside is lack of PWM. Otherwise Noctua's would be the most efficient PWM fans I've found.

Many Gigabyte mobo's can control fans via voltage rather than PWM in which case I would be looking at GT's.

I use them PWM at 12v with Phanteks PWM adapter. :D

But am partial to Thermalright TY-140 fans, but they are becoming hard to find. Thnk new TY-141 is replacing them.

I want to try the new Thermalright TY-143 600-2500rpm. Very loud when ramped up but should be quiet a low rpm.

so would something like this be near silent at idle?
Thermalright True Spirit 140 CPU Cooler
thanks for all the advice guys:)

I would think so. Assuming you have it hooked to mobo and set to idle as low as possible when CPU is idling. I have 3x TY-140 fans sandwiched on my Phanteks cooler. At 750rpm 30cm away I hear whisper quiet "sh" and a meter I strain to hear anything.

Edit: That didn't sound right.
Strain to hear anything from fans!
I'm not near deaf. :o

Says the man with a brand new unused Silver Arrow SB-E.

If TRUE Spirit 140 wasn't good I know where the SA SB-E would be right now. ;)

The above coolers are big enough you can turn their fans off at idle and CPU won't overheat. ;)

how can i turn the cpu fan off at idle?
i downloaded speedfan but it doesnt seem to work on my mb
Gigabyte G31M-ES2L

I suggest you use Easy Tune 6. That's the Gigabyte software for several things but I only use it for fan control.

You will need to go into bios too. Won't turn off fan but will idle them down very slow.
