Intending to buy an R9 280x 2nd hand next week and looking around I can see that practically every manufacturer is available but which ones are the ones I should be looking at?

I've got the members market visible but I've never used it I don't think.

Get a 280x off there. Wndsr has some MSI and Powercolour cards going for £135-£140, which it a total bargain.

Grab them while you can - some are new and some have been mined on, but the card is still in warranty so any issues, you'll just get a new card under RMA :D Win Win!!

i got R9 280X VaporX, the previous version not the new one, it looks great, have backplate, led logo, quiet, and stresse test GPU temps 71 degree, at gaming mostly 58-64 degree, with factury clock of 1070mhz, no trottle no whinne.
unboxing of the card :

I have no idea what mining is but gather people use graphics cards to do it. Does this have the potential to wear the card out quicker than it would if it had been used for gaming? I need to weigh up whether buying 2nd hand would be a false economy.

Inconclusive.

There is nothing to determine 100% if it deteriorates the card, but obviously heavy and extensive usage "may" take its toll.

Look on the flip side, you're buying a card with warranty. If you require an RMA, you're only going to get a new card!
