Hey people I am vuilidng a file server but am Interested on what a good CPU and RAM would be to run it good. I'll also be using it to download lots on, any help?

Cheers

could probably run xp or 2003 comfortably with around 1GB ram and around a 1.5Ghz CPU for downloading/storage and serving files. if your transferring big files e.g. 1-5GB then i'd recommend getting gigabit as its a nightmare having just 10MB/sec max transfer on 10/100

Linkage? BTW I'll be running it on a wireless network. I have 3 PC's in 2 Rooms to link together to a Router that is in another room on the otherside of the house (Garage)

linkage? its late your gonna have to SPELL IT to me :p

If you're running a file server over wireless, the cpu/ram question is largely irrelevant as you will be bottlenecked on the network long before you could stress the cpu/ram even with a P3.

yep thats true ^^

I have a file server/download box running on an old Duron 1.2GHz and 384MB PC133 RAM with XP Pro - works just fine.

I'm writing this on what used to be my file server. It's a 700 MHz PIII with 384 MiB RAM. It's probably way overkill for waht it did. It's filling in as my home main machine while I've got my main rig on loan to a friend so I had to install an X server. Even with X running it's very quick. I could easily use this as my everyday machine.

Get a used OEM rig for your server. They're cheap and plintiful and most any speed will do.

True... Ideally you want the file server connected directly to the router via Ethernet. That brings me to my question, why can't you have them both together in the garage?

& for a file server, you need very minimum specs like whats been suggested :)
