best RAM for CPU

Hey guys, I was thinking of upgrading my AM3 motherboard based system to it's final form ;) while I save up for a couple years to make the leap to X99 DDR4 or whatever is around by then.

So in the mean time I was going to pick up a FX-8 Eight Core 8370E when I noticed that it says it can run upto 2400MHz RAM. Now I just about got my head around OCing CPUs, I've never really bother trying to get a few 100MHz of extra RAM, just didn't seem worth it. But now I'm wondering if I could run some 2133MHz RAM like this Kingston HyperX Beast on my ASRock 990FX Extreme3 motherboard?

I tried to research a bit but the CPU says 2400, the motherboard says 2100 and I'm really not sure how it all fits together. Does it 'just work' or do I have to enter the timings, overclock the voltage?

Any advice please?

Hey man. I'm a little unclear on the question. Are you asking if that particular ram will be compatible with your mobo and cpu set-up? Or are you asking how easy it is to overclock said RAM?

If it's the first, it should be fine. In fact most DDR3 will be compatible with your set-up. Take no notice about the speed and what not. If your components can't handle it, the speed will be automatically down clocked.

I think I was a little unclear in my own head if that RAM would 'just work' or if I had to do something special to it to make it work at the speeds advertised (like overclock it in the BIOS).

How I started off with this was I noticed that there is RAM for sale and I couldn't find any motherboard that actually said it supported those speeds. So this is now something of a revelation to me that you can, like you say, take no notice of what it says and just stick some faster RAM in there anyway and it will work.

Good to know that combo's feasible, I think I got my head around it now, thanks!
