Hey all just wondering what the best ram is for gaming my mobo is a formula striker 2, price is not a issue. I would like at least 4 gig and for it to be compatible, with my baord.

can some one explain what the differances are between

DDR2 PC2-6400C4 and PC2-8500

I always thought the pc2-8500 was faster due to the higher mhz, but i notice you can get lower timings for the 6400, and get 8 gig running at that speed. So which is best for gaming and can you explain why.

8500 runs at 1066 MHz usually at 5-5-5-15 timings at around 2.1 to 2.2V

6400 runs at 800 MHz usually at 4-4-4-12 timings at around 1.8 to 2.1V

Traditionally AMD systems respond better than intel to tight (lower) timings and intel respond better to higher MHz generally. Every little helps though.

Best recommendation would be this I just got in today:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-039-KS

Top speeds in both the depts. I just mentioned and the lifetime warranty service is excellent - RMA turnaround in a couple of days but to be honest, you'll probably never need it with Kingston ;)

4Gb is plenty for a gaming system and its the norm to fill just 2 slots out of the 4 on your motherboard as it stresses the NB chipset less = better/ high overclocks and overall stability.

Hope this helps mate :)

Those are the ones i was looking at, they look good kingston seem high on my qvl list so they should work ok. Would i gain any benfit from running 8gb worth. Would i have to lower to 800mhz to get 8gb working.

Thanks for your help :)

If you are planning on overclocking your CPU, 8GB will just mean more fiddling with NB voltages on your motherboard (Memory controller chip). They'll stil run at 1066MHz. Stock CPU speed will just work fine anyway.

4GB will be plenty for a gaming system, even on Vista. 8GB WILL help games like Crysis and GTA4 for sure. Stuff like COD4 and Far Cry 2 will run fine on 4GB. My advice would be to buy 4GB now and see how it goes, then if you want 8GB, just buy another 4GB kit. If you really want 8GB, go for it...I can always help you out if you have problems. (See our OcUK support forum) :D

Any problems, drop me a line ;)
