Ahoy!

Remote Desktop on Windows 7 isn't working for some reason so what is the best alternative? It only needs to work over a LAN connection so I'm not concerned about internet performance, etc. LAN only is fine.

Any suggestions?

TeamViewer - you have to enable the LAN part (Direct in I think they call it) in the options.

No need to port forward if you do want to access it via the internet which is a bonus.

Why not fix the problem? Why doesn't it work?

Well, the computer I'm trying to connect to has Remote Desktop enabled, but I just get a message saying -

'Remote Desktop can't connect to the remote computer for one of these reasons'

I check all the reasons are enabled/sorted and it still doesn't work.

To fix RD..

First step, disable the firewall on both machines and try again, enable them one at a time until one of them breaks it.

Then fiddle with the rules on that machine

As stated above by others I use Teamviewer all the time

AFAIK the RDP uses port 3389 - ensure you have this allowed on both machines AND the router (port porwarded)

He uses it over the LAN, so no need to port forward :). Best bet, like stated above is to disable the firewall on both machines while you test
