Best Retro Handheld

I almost did, but Batch 1 is now out of stock so next batch won't ship until mid Jan.

I have the Odin 2 Pro, but I think the Thor is a more portable unit.

Yeah I managed to get one. Ordered on 5th November, it shipped on 17th with DHL and arrived 20th. No customs charges either which I was worried about but most people were reporting no charge so thought I'd risk it for the much faster delivery compared to 4px.
Went with the Black Max version. Only turned up late yesterday so not had a proper chance to play around with it yet, and I'm off on holiday tomorrow so it will have to wait to get a thorough test.
I've got a few bits set up so far, mainly just to play 3DS stuff which it seems to do very well, from the limited amount of time I've had it with it at least. I'll report back when I'm back off hols and given it a thorough seeing to :D

Yeah the black one looks really nice with it having the OLED. I love the look of the white one, but those borders aren't ideal then. It looks perfect for DS, 3DS, and when the emulator matures a bit more, Wii U. Be interested to see what your thoughts are though when you've had more time with it. Especially about the hinges! Have a great holiday though in the mean time!
 
I've pretty much palmed off any work today and sat here setting this little beast up. The joys of WFH.
So far I've got ES-DE set up and played some DS, 3DS, Switch and Dreamcast and I have to say it's been faultless with the few games I have tried, albeit only short bursts on each game just to check them out. 3DS and NDS games running at 4x upscale look fantastic. Crazy Taxi at 1080p 60FPS is a joy to play on it :D Switch has been ok, had problems with Mario Kart 8 (probably need to muck around with the settings), but Mario Odyssey and Wonder both run at pretty much locked 60, with a few dips here and there as shaders compile.
I've also managed to get it networked to my pc which makes transferring files over so much easier, can even send wallpapers from Wallpaper Engine over to it.
Had a quick play with Gamehub and a had look at Balatro, Stardew Valley and Circuit Superstars all of which ran at 60fps (or very close to). They are hardly demanding games but it's a welcome addition to have my whole Steam library at my fingertips.
I think I need to get a grip though. It's not too bad ergonomically if you're just using the face buttons but once you need to start using the shoulder buttons as well I can see it getting a bit crampy (but I do have fairly big hands, so ymmv)

Overall I'm super impressed with it so far. Left the fan set to Smart and haven't heard it once, but I'm sat next to my pc and laptop so might be different in a quiet room after a long session. Can't wait to sit down and actually play some games properly, there's a whole load of 3DS games I missed out on that I'm really looking forward to getting stuck into. I'm sorely tempted to take it on holiday but I've already had "The Look" from the Mrs so I think I'm best off leaving it at home :p

Have you tried any Wii or more specifically Wii U? Really interested how the latter works / performs...
 
they work fine on the Odin 2 Pro, and the Thor is the same chipset, so I assume it will be the same.
 
I didn't have "Playing an Android version of RDR for "free" through Netflix on my RP5 with full gamepad controla" on my to do list this year but here we are!

I would even show an image if I knew where to upload it these days.

However I do have graphical glitches extending into the screen from the top right and bottom left. No graphical options to change really...

Had a bit of time to look at Wii-U emulation now. Looks like its a rabbit hole I need to explore properly as I've never tried before and I'll be honest I've struggled with all the different file formats and shenanigans (looks like you need .Wua files)
Managed to get NintendoLand working no problem, runs beautifully however I can't get past the opening bit where you have to move the gamepad around to find the Monitar dude - the gyro just doesn't seem to be working with it and for the life of me I can't work out what I'm doing wrong.
Mario Maker I gave up on due to the aforementioned file format shenanigans.
I did get Wind Waker HD and New Super Mario Bros U running without any problem at all and they run really well, really smooth and perfectly playable.

So it looks like its very capable of running Wii-U games, as long as you know what you're doing. I definitely need to do some reading!

What brand / model of SD card are people using these days. After 512GB or maybe even 1TB to live permanently in my steam deck and won't be formatted regularly or faffed with (unlike my retro handhelds)

Switch branded (e.g. the Yellow Mario Star 256GB) Micro SD for my Retro console ROMs, Lexar for OS (just because they were on offer and were decent enough)

SanDisk have crapped out on me a couple of time. 512GB Amazon basics cards seem very reliable and have great sustained write speeds. The 1TB / 2TB cards i've used usually suffer on the sustained write.
 
Got a samsung sd card im using in my deck for retro stuff, no problems so far, although not had it a long time.

There are no poor choices (as long as you didn't overpay for it), as long as you are realistic about it's capabilities.
Afaik It's a step slower than the RGxx Anbernics, so realistically it is good for everything 8 bit, most 16 bit and probably PS1 but beyond that you will start stretching it (e.g
PSP/Dreamcast/N64) And should be considered a bonus
