Best Retro Handheld

it was £31 delivered with 256gb of storage. so not exactly expensive but at the same time I think it's been cheaper.
it is primarily for 16bit stuff and PS1, tho any Dreamcast/N64 would be a bonus.
I justify my handheld purchases by telling myself new games are selling for seventy quid each...

And when you hear that the campaign for Metroid Prime 4 is about 12 hours the bang for buck on a £31 device doesn't sound bad at all.

The Ayn Thor is so cool but I still kind of feel android DS emulation isn't quite there yet due to input lag (Elite Beat Agents, etc).

MelonDS's development is so active and fast that I wonder if we'll see Run Ahead get implemented sometime in 2026; I think that'd fix the input lag issues.

technically it is for my birthday off the wife in Jan.... but i need to "test" it of course :D

Mind you, i best not count any chickens given the issues EVRI appear to be having at the moment, it may not actually get here ;)

That 2 screen 3DS copy handheld above looks amazing, i expect it would also be superb simulating the old nintendo game and watch devices.

Mind you given the number of problems my original donkey kong 2 multiscreen handheld has given me with that ribbon cable i am wary of 2 screen devices, esp as that 2nd screen would never get used by me for 90% of the time.

That said, maybe i should be less harsh on my (actually my wifes) Game & watch... it is over 40 years old now so perhaps a few issues can be forgiven :D

Once they get powerful enough to emulate the Wii U i will get one i think..... i expect they would be perfect for covering the game and the tablet screen.

So my Anbernic RG40XXV has suddenly developed a blue vertical line down the screen.

It's only 8 months old, purchased through AliExpress and mistakenly thought I would get a year of warranty.

Reached out to AE and Anbernic and past 90 days you are on your own. It's not that expensive but glad I've not bought anything more pricey from them although I have a fair few handhelds.

Will have to think carefully what I buy and from where in future, just wanted to flag for anyone else who assumed you might get some sort of warranty.

Purchased on a credit card? Even if it was through PayPal, I'd be having a chat with them.

You haven't just tried a new firmware?

That device could probably emulate some Wii U games, it'll probably only be limited by the lack of advancement in Cemu on Android.

perhaps.... but i will wait a generation or so until it is more complete (also hopefully will be a more developed emulator by then)
its a bit like my R36 U... technically it can run N64 stuff and indeed it does have a few titles.

but in truth it does not have the legs to do it really, so its not a device i would have bought for playing n64 on.

Why do I suddenly have an urge to get something like a Legion Go S Z2Go / Legion Go S Z1 extreme 32GB versions of each.

Sticking SteamOS on either and being able to play Skate 3 (Xbox 360 - Xenia Canary) at 60fps is the dream.
It worked, but at 30fps/double buffered on my Steam Deck. I have since got rid of it but really enjoyed that and BeamNG drive on the deck - both sort of chugged though and hit the 16GB RAM limit and CPU limits. Id probably buy second hand and it seems the Z2 Go 32GB model can be had for around £400 delivered.

Android device wise (Odin 3 / SD Elite) simply cannot match the likes of even the Steam deck... yet :)

Good point, I paid via Klarna but they seem to have a dispute process but it's more for flagging the goods aren't as described so might not get anywhere but worth logging a case.

I've been using MUOS for a while, haven't changed anything or updated, I'd heard cfw wasn't working as Anbernic had silently changed the screens in the 40XX devices but it was working fine until this morning.

I will try another just to be sure, but looking at my issue it seem like a hardware problem, kinda like the vertical line you could get on an old GB.

I've been having a look at similar, was simply going to pickup a Steam Deck OLED but the SteamOS Legion Go devices look tempting although most of the reviews I see about the Z2 Go CPU aren't exactly overly positive.

Not quite the same but I've gone from a Steam Deck to an ROG Xbox Ally X and I use it so much more than I ever did my Steam Deck. Emulation performance is amazing but being able to play native PC games on it is unbelievable. Currently playing through Silent Hill 2 remastered at 1080p30fps and apart from a few hitches every so often its spot on.

Do they offer replacement screens? I can't imagine it's that difficult to replace.
