Best router for longer-line ADSL/2/2+ stable and fast connection?

Hey,

I had been on cable for a good few years, but moving out into the middle of nowhere... I'm back in the days of an ADSL connection of about 5/1

My rather old DG834GT syncs around 5/1 quite easily... but lately, I'm finding it dropping quite frequently and sometimes it's been staying down for too long.

For comparison, the router the provider have supplied... syncs at only 4/0.7 :(

I'm thinking maybe the DG834GT is getting a bit old & wondering... what's the best on the market at the moment for a stable longer-reach ADSL connection?

I don't care about much of the capability of the router other than it's ability to hold a stable and fast ADSL/2/2+ connection as I have a decent cable Asus router I can use for the in-house functions.

Thanks

The GT is a broadcom, which I much prefer for longer lines (4/0.8 here)

My old DG834v4 started failing so I've replaced it with a TP-Link TD-W8960N v5!, also a broadcom, quite cheap, and reasonably new.

Edit to add v5, must be v5, other ones are not broadcom! Got a v5 from the rain forest.

Oh, it does support modem only mode, I am using a pfsense firewall to initiate the PPPoE connection, although the only issue is if you plug in another cable to monitor the modem at the same time, it broadcasts internet traffic out of all the ports in bridge mode.

Just wanted to update this to mention that I picked up a Billion 7800DXL

Annnnnnd... I love it, great piece of kit.

I had a DG834GT before this... something I had laying around from my days on Be/O2 LLU ADSL2+... with TeamGT or UberGT firmware on it

"Freebox" proprietary piece of crap that my provider supply with their service was syncing at about 4mbps down and 650-700kbps up and pings of around 50-60ms to provider DNS servers and/or google.

DG834GT... syncing at about 4.5-5mbps down and 950kbps up with pings in the region of 35ms

Billion 7800DXL didn't knock the sync speed up by that much at default settings... up to a sync of about 5.3-5.4mbps down and 970kbps up with pings of about 13-15ms.

That massive ping drop has been sensational... for both gaming and general web surfing.

With a bit of SNR tweaking... getting it down to 3dB and I have a sync speed of 6mbit as well as a stable line. 2dB and things start dropping out.

Stick it on normal mode (i prefer fastpath for lower pings) and it pops up to 6.5mbit and pings drop to 30ms... which is still lower than the DG834GT on fastpath, haha.

So yes... brilliant router... and for even more than sync speed... the ping drop is much greater than I had anticipated.

The DG834GT was getting old and overheating/needing a reboot every 2-3 days... this thing hasn't needed a reset since the initial setup... running wonderfully smooth :)

I too have the Billion 7800DXL on my line only manage 3 down and 797 up
out of curiosity what is your errors like?
How many in a day ish?

Don't know about per day, but that's the details since at least last sync or reboot... which has been at least a week+

For some reason, your image has uploaded at too low a resolution and in a really really bad quality - so I can't actually read any of it!

But... I can see five digits where I have one... maybe increase your SNR one dB and try?

Altered the piccy
Messing with the DB etc don`t make a difference.Have tried for years :(
Too far from the exchange and the cab with very poor quality lines

still seems a bit off but readable I think:o

Is the connection set to use ADSL1 only? shouldn't be many exchanges left without ADSL2, I found that I got 500-750Kb boost to sync from the change, along with being more stable than it used to be. For G.dmt and 57db attenuation, it's not really going to get much better.

Yeah exchange has adsl 2+
But i have found that although there is not much in it for synch adsl gdmt is more stable. No sign of fibre for my cab either.exchange was enabled about 2 years ago but cab is 2 miles from that down country lane and i am a further 1.5 miles from the cab :(
