Best router for Virgin 100 meg?

I've had a 100meg Virgin connection for a couple of months now after upgrading from 50meg and have been quite impressed with it I've been using the DLink DIR615 router all this time with the old modem (VGM300 I think?) and have been having weird problems lately where a T4 timeout will cause the router to drop the connection until the router is restarted, which is rather annoying when you want to access your home network from work etc. After flashing the DIR615 with the DD-WRT firmware and still having the problem, I've decided it's a hardware issue, therefore new router time.

I'm tempted to splash out on a higher end router such as one of the Draytek routers (http://www.draytek.co.uk/products/vigor2920.html) but to get a Draytek router with dual gigabit wan you are looking at £350+, which is a lot for a home router. Ideally I'd like dual gigabit to ensure I'm ready for speeds greater than 100meg from virgin, and possible having a secondary connection later on for the occasional times the virgin connection goes down, as well as the router being able to handle >100meg wan throughput. The USB port for a 3G dongle is a nice feature to have as a cheaper secondary connection for now.

Does anyone else using virgin 100meg connections have any other router suggestions? Cheers.

You want a home router that has dual gigabit wan ports? Are you intending on paying for two 100Mb+ broadband connections just in case one of them goes down for a couple of hours?

Dual Gigabit WAN probably is a little bit overkill. I would pay for 2 x 100meg connections from Virgin, however that's going to offer very little in the way of redundancy as they would most likely both go down at the same time. I guess 100meg+ BT Infinity is a way off yet, so 1 x Gigabit WAN and 1 x 100meg WAN is a more sensible idea :)

The 2920 you mention should do what you want. I'm using one on my FTTC connection, but mainly for its VPN capabilities.

Unless you really need dual wan ports, something like the Asus RT-N56U would make more sense. It’s a lot cheaper, has massive lan/wan bandwidth, and also offers simultaneous dual band wireless.

100Mb BT Infinity is here. Go see their order page.
