Currently on Sky FTTC with the stock black SKY router which is rubbish.

I'm looking to replace this with a modem and router. The router must have built-in VPN server capability.

Any recommendations for both the modem and router?

Can you now get the details from SKY to use a third party?

I was always under the impression with SKY you are stuck with their hardware?

Was just looking into this earlier today!

You can (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0uukSRHzAxk) but all the warnings that go with it make it not something I want to mess with right now.

Essentially it's against Skys terms of service, so if they detect an unknown MAC address connecting to their network they might disable the connection.

You can obviously still add your own router, which I'm going to do, but I won't be replacing their modem.

That was the only thing that worries me, however I know a lot of people are using their own hardware and not had any problems. This was what prompted me to took into it. Thanks for the info on the gear, I'll check them out.

Sky can like it or lump it. I'm doing it...

Yeah I know. I've done a fair bit of reading on this recently, and I've not seen an instance where anything negative happened. I'm fine though, I'm outside of contract at the moment - If anything was to happen I'll just jump ship to BT fibre anyway.

Will do.

Have a look at either the Draytek 2860 or 2760 (can't remember if that can be setup for incoming VPN though).

2860 is the one you need - 2760 doesn't do incoming VPN that I can see.

Essentially it's against Skys terms of service, so if they detect an unknown MAC address connecting to their network they might disable the connection.

On the Draytek's (or at least on the 2830 and 3200's I have here at work), you can specify a MAC Address for each WAN Port as well, so you could spoof that to the MAC of the Sky Router/Modem.

I have had my ASUS RT-N66U on my Sky fibre connection for over a year now. With Merlin firmware, copied the MAC off the old router and have had no issues. I use the VPN a lot too and it works great. With ASUS you also get a free .asuscomm.com DNS wotsit too :)

Never used Sky's own router in 10 years of ADSL/Fibre etc - never had any issues at all.

Currently using a TD-W9980 on Fibre Pro and works fine. Take about 5 mins to get your username/password from sky hub.

Andy, I have the ASUS RT-N66U in my list as it keeps coming up in my searches with good reviews - The price seems nice too. Which modem make/model are you using with it - I'm assuming you're using an HG612. If so does the HG612 need any modification? I already downloaded the latest Merlin firmware RT-N66U_378.55_0 and I have now wiresharked the user and password from my Sky SR102. so it looks like i'm set on getting a ASUS RT-N66U with HG612

The Draytek's are nice. but quite pricey compared to the Asus. I'll take a look at the TD-W9980's too.

Thanks for the info everyone. It's much appreciated

I had nothing but trouble using my own router with sky. Ended up just plugging it in too the sky router as the drop outs were a nightmare (Nearly every minute). With BT now haven't looked back.
