I haven't played any decent RTS games since the days of Age of empires 2 :(

What is currently the best RTS game out? I'm looking to buy a game once Semester 1 finishes of uni, which should be in a couple of weeks.

I tried the COH demo out and found it pretty decent!

The most important factor for me is online play, prefferably a community that's live and kicking that isn't going to die out anytime soon :)

Post your recommendations away!

I've got the beta & key but I can't play it due to a major bug.

Keeps prompting me to debug with Visual Studio. I've reported it too.

Medieval 2 looks pretty damn good too! Decsions . .

CoH is pretty good. Although the World War II Genre is being done to death at the moment. Easy to pick up and play. The Netcode is a bit poop if you like playing online. Graphically very good but can be a bit of system hog.
Although it is promised to be a lot smoother when running on Vista and DX10

Dawn of War anthology. Just brilliant, never got into any RTS except Red alert 2 and yuris revenge before this.

Agreed, it's one of the best RTS games out there. Fast paced, good graphics, excellent animation and tons of strategic options. 7 races too now with the superb Dark Crusade expansion, which incidentally makes the single player a lot of fun.

completely agree, only just got the dark crusade but its damn good and the single player is also quite interesting with the shogun style battlemap

If you fancy sci-fi then it has to be Dark Crusade Anthology (£25 online includes Dawn of War & Winter Assault addons)

If you prefer historical, World War II flavoured RTS then you cannot beat Company of Heroes (£25 with a free copy of Dawn of War)

Pretty much sums it up really, I wouldn't consider anything else out there until Supreme Commander and C&C 3 are released next year.

Company of heroes does it for me, amazing game

Can be had for £15 aswell. :)

Its very very fun, I just sat on a bridge once in a skirmish game with a couple of 88's and blew up shermans for a few hours, very good game with the cover aspect.

Company of Heroes is the best IMO. Dawn of War is good, but the last expansion was just more of the same to me. CoH has so many clever features and is highly tactical. Great game.

Guys I'm stuck between medieval 2 and COH. They're similarly priced but COH comes with Dawn of war GOTY Edition which a lot of people keep raving on about. So in essence 2 games for 1.

What's the online aspect/community like for the above?

Would appreciate any feedback as I'm hovering over the buy button for COH.

:)

But going back a bit, Age of Mythology remains my all-time favourite RTS.
I've still got this pretty much brand new

I stopped playing after 5 minutes, didn't have that AOE2 'feel' to it. I should give it another chance sometime!
