Hey all,

I may be able to get my hands on a cheap 1080 ti to replace my current 1070 ti.

I game in 1440p and currently use a Ryzen 1600x overclocked to 3.9 Ghz.

My motherboard (GA-AX370) supports up to 3rd generation Ryzen CPU's.

If I go with the 1080 ti, would it be best to also upgrade my 1600x, or would it not cause a bottleneck at 1440p? If an upgrade is required, what would be the best Ryzen CPU to go for, in terms of bang for buck and overclocking potential?

Thanks :)

Overclocking potential is minimal on just about all of the Ryzens

3600 is probably where the vest value is at - but to make it more of an upgrade I would be looking for the cheapest 3rd gen 8 core you can find instead

1600x wont bottleneck a 1080 ti much, a 2080 on a 1600x at 4ghz is still in the 90%'s of gpu utilization.
I say get the good deal on a 1080ti first and worry about the cpu later but should be acceptable gpu utilization probably end up getting at least 95%

I swapped my 1600x for a 3600 recently on my rig with a 1080 Ti in and its not a massive difference at 1440p for max fps but there is a rise in the minimum dips in benchmarks for Assassins Creed.

I sold my 1600x for £85 so it was a cheap upgrade but not sure it was necessary, I would hold on until Ryzen 4000 later in the year and see what current gen 3700x to 3900x drop to for a decent value upgrade.

It depends on the games you play and how effectively they use the CPU, I upgraded from a 1600x @ 3.95ghz all core to a 3900x stock and have seen nice gains in titles such as GTA, others not so much

This is probably worth a watch for you: https://youtu.be/RHw67eaT32U

I upgraded to a 1080Ti whilst still running my old [email protected]. Was fine - but not great - across a mix of games.

I eventually made the jump to a [email protected] and that made a significant difference, especially to the 1% and 0.1% lows, which is what really matters (as average fps was already pretty high.)

TBH, unless the 1080Ti is really cheap, and you can get a good price for your 1070Ti, I'd simply stay where you are and upgrade to a newer Zen3 system later in the year. I can't see any reason why you'd jump from a 1070Ti for 1440p - it should be more than enough with a few tweaked settings.

A 1600x beats anything in the world according to@jigger

But if I were in your shoes, I would get anything 8 core,or it's not worth a upgrade.

I game at 1440p with a 1080ti and in most games I'm 80-120 fps with EVERYTHING cranked up.

The Ryzen 5 3600 is currently the best bang for the buck CPU. I have one myself and coming from an i7 6700 the improvement is pretty big! Those extra cores do help and it is not a ridiculous amount of money!

It largely depends on what are the main games you play but generally your 1600X will be fine with a 1080Ti. I have used both together and you'll still see improvement going to the 1080Ti @1440p.
As others have said wait till Ryzen 4000 to see how it affects prices to see if you can get a cheaper CPU upgrade.

Always get as many cpu cores and your wallet allows. 1080ti is still a excellent card and yes it's jump from a 1070ti .
Just keep an eye on the latest from Nvidia & AMD if you want to play the waiting game as, many here think is, always the best option.
