Best sat nav replacement

Just got rid of a tomtom go 500 and been looking at a galaxy s3 or lumia 920 asa phone/satnav combination, any recommendations on apps or phones.

Why did you get rid of the Tomtom Go 500? Are you bothered about traffic avoidance or just want it for navigation?

Tomtom on Android is pretty close to their older standalone units. They will be porting the Go 500 software to Android and iPhone in the next few months. I've tried more navigation software than I care to summarise in detail and Tomtom would generally get my recommendation, with the caveat that its HD Traffic service sometimes misses road closures picked up by TMC.

Sygic! It has a full 1 week free trial. Best sat nav I've ever used on a phone.

google maps is good on the S3, you just need a generous data plan (1gb+) if using it daily.

I like TomTom for android too, especially the lane changing guidance.

i've used waze and found it pretty good for free..now owned by google.

Sygic & Copilot for offline and Waze when you have data.

The potential of Waze is pretty immense. It's been almost entirely reliant on its community and users though. It's main flaw at the moment is lack of users to generate live traffic. If Google were to start feeding it their own traffic data though, it could be the best commuting app around.
