Best security system for home?

Another vote for anti-snap. They are also a visual deterrent as they are clearly identified versus regular locks:

I also fitted some stainless steel 2* security door handles - look good and the external handle will laugh at mole grips. They are quite chunky internally - its very unlikely anything could even get any purchase to snap the locks due to the design.

The old handles were getting tarnished so was a no-brainer to fit at the same time I changed the locks.

Waste of money, you are not allowed to use cctv footage in court and majority of them hide their faces now, because they know people use cctv, everyone ignores house alarms going off, all you are doing is advertising that you have something worth stealing
Replies like this, frequently seen in alarm related threads, seem to misunderstand the main motivation for most people to install an alarm system nowadays. If someone breaks into my house whilst my family and I are asleep, I want to know about it. If someone breaks into my house whilst I am out, I want to know about it. A modern house alarm with internet connectivity is very effective at fulfilling those two objectives.

It is also wrong to assume that the main objective of installing CCTV is to enable prosecution of any prospective burglar. For many, the ability to have live eyes on the perimeter and key areas of the property is of much higher value than capturing mugshots for the Crown Prosecution Service.

I had an attempt on my property last year after a motorbike sale turned into a blatant scam. The alarm alerted me to their presence (but did not alert them) and I was able to watch their every move as they attempted access to the garage and shed. This was valuable intel for me as I was able to see what security measures worked and which ones didn’t.

The alarm or the CCTV weren’t deterrents. But they enabled me to know there was an attempt underway and to quietly monitor and review the effectiveness of my security. What actually prevented them being successful were the physical security measures. Avocet ABS cylinders, garage defender, dead bolts on the shed door, and spikes on the key entry/exit points over walls/fences. Without the alarm and CCTV I wouldn’t even have been aware they were there.

Heh, thanks for all the ideas (and chuckles!)

Daft question, what is an antisnap lock? I've got those 8 point lock things on the doors?

Ok, might need to look at the monthly fee options if they give a decent result - might look at simplisafe et al and then check what integrates nicely with home assistant.

Generally they have funky looking keys/ barrels:

You can swap your existing barrels quite easily. One screw, pop it out, measure, get on Amazon/ToolStation/Screwfix.

Best deterrent now is probably having the lights off and a candle flickering in the window. Any potential thief will think you don't have anything worth stealing.

And what exactly do they do that makes them better?

They don't snap, or they snap at the right place. They are visually "anti-snap locks", so it may be enough of a deterrent to attract a thief to a house without anti snap locks.

That video posted by @dLockers is exactly what I was referring too and shows the reason I upgraded my standard barrels for anti-snap barrels.
A thief can snap away a standard barrel lock until they reveal the centre of the barrel. At that point the entire lock can be operated by anything that fits in the remainder of the barrel - that could be a screwdriver as shown in the video.
Regardless of how many points your multi-point locking system has, the barrel is the weakness.

Ah, interesting - might have a look at these. We live in a very low crime area (famous last words!) but no harm in tightening up!

I'd always look at the boundaries of the property first and see if there are any easy to gain entry and hide area's. If so, look at fixing, or planting nut job plants like - Pyracantha Firethorn - Then work towards the property and fix as you go.

When happy, throw whatever alarm on it and consider that most crack heads and 12 year old feral rats do not give a **** and if you have something they want, then they will get it.
