4 is the current one, and has been out for a while, 3 is getting a bit creaky these days and most of its packages are pretty old, like MySQL 3 and I think still the 2.4 kernel.
Latest and greatest where ever applicable, imo. There's a reason it has a higher version number, and except for certain situations, it's because it will be an improvement over the lesser number versions.
