Best setup for Yamaha 5.1 system please

Hi all

I have a Samsung 3D tv and blue ray. Currently linked via optical to the Yamaha 5.1

TV is Samsung PS50C 680G5 KXXV
Yamaha amp is HTR 5540 RDS
Samsung Bluray is BD C5900
Apple TV

What is the best way to link my sky q to optical also. The Yamaha only has 1 optical input

I was recommended the following on another forum but need to decide on a model to suit

"Add a multiple Input HDMI Switch with HDMI + Optical Output (will need to have decent EDID management to allow you to override the TV 2.0 EDID)."

Any help much appreciated

no HDMI connections on the yamaha

So I am guessing an HDMI switch with a single optical output which would deliver the sound to the Yamaha??

My AV processor lacks hdmi but it has five coaxial and four optical so plenty of legecy digital inputs.

So if i get a switch won't that do it, don't want to splash out on new AVR yet

By purchasing a simple Optical to Coaxial converter you won't need to bother with the hassle of an external switch box. You'll also avoid any potential issues with auto switch boxes such as Sky's Optical never really going to sleep even when the box is on standby. (This was a problem with the older Sky HD boxes, not sure if it's still an issue with Sky Q as I've used HDMI for those on all of my installations.) Using boh the Optical and the Coaxial inputs will give you full 5.1 surround and you'll only need to source switch with the Yamaha remote.

NOTE: Make sure to get the direction of the conversion right. It's Optical TO Coaxial. These things are directional. If you buy a Coaxial to Optical box by mistake or because it's marginally cheaper then you'll find that you are stuffed because it won't work in reverse. To get the right thing, look up "
POF-830 - Optical-to-Coaxial Audio Converter - Optical to PCM" on the rain forest site.

Longer term, you could really do with upgrading the AVR to one with HDMI inputs. It doesn't have to be new, just something more up-to-date will help with connection issues.

Wont this type of switch work - link all 4 devices via HDMI to the switch, then the switch to the TV and by optical to AVR??
