It's a Sunday, it's raining, and I have a current hankering for turn-based strategy, and am looking to collect some good exmaples of the genre, new or old, that will work on Vista. I'm primarily interested in turn-based games, especially fantasy, sci-fi or historical based... but also like real-time games that are on a slower, less frantic pace than DOW/C&C etc and that focus on expansionist type gameplay with technology/age research etc.

Games I can think of off the top of my head are:

Civ III & IV
Alpha Centauri
Anno 1701
Galactic Civilisations II
HOMM III & IV
Settlers II 10th Anniversary
Sins of a Solar Empire
Empire Earth II

Any more I should be looking at? :)

Total War? I see it's not on your list. Great Game and you can automate battles if you just fancy the turn based part.

anno 1701, buy the gold edition which includes the expansion, should be out real soon. its a really great game and it looks good too

Ahh I forgot those... i've played all games in the series, they're great. :)

I picked up HOMM IV for 99p at my local second hand game shop. Best game ive played in a long time.

It's good, but III was better in many respects imo!

Have a look at space rangers II- also Rise of nations if you never played it.
It's not turn based but supreme commander can be taken very slow.

Anno 1701 is seriously slow :) A firend and i could play games that lasted 8hrs + luckily it has save games for multiplayer.

Of course i will recommend M:TW 2 :D

Just got hold of Galactic Civilisations II and it seems pretty decent but will take some getting used to... TONS of technologies to research too!

Stronghold 2

Played that game and it was fun, but the combat peed me off in its simplicity and with the AI attacking en masse a bit too frequently for my liking, it was a bit frustrating at times.
