I'm considering re-using a decent socket 754 CPU I have in a new build and thought it would be a good idea to go PCI express to have access to the latest graphics cards and be able to use the card again in a future upgrade.

Just wondered if anyone has any experience of socket 754 PCI express boards and what the best one to go for is?

Thanks for replies

It has to be the Asrock dual sata 2 939, I just got one and its marvelous and @ £50 its a bargain and a half. Check out the huge thread.

The titles "Best socket 754 board" mate, not S939 mate.

Asus K8N4-E Deluxe nForce4 4X (Socket 754) PCI-Express Motherboard
Abit NV8 nForce4 4X (Socket 754) PCI-Express Motherboard

Both of those look nice :)

Thanks for the replies.

I must admit that the Epox board certainly does look nice.

Shame that OcUK don't seem to stock Epox any more. I wonder why?

I think it may be something to do with Epox's support but i am not sure. You seem to be ok as long as nothing goes wrong. I did have a small problem once and contacted Epox's UK support email and did get my problem sorted quite quickly but i may have been lucky.

You can get this board from two UK online retailers and it costs £67. Top buy. :D

To be honest all Gigabyte A64 boards that I've played with seem terrible :(

yes agreed this isn't the only strange "quirk" I've encountered on this board

a phantom system fan that goes full whack by it's self, for no reason atall!

It seems to overvolt everything!

Sometimes I get the message and tray icon "safe to remove hardware" when you click on it, it is concerning a sata hdd ,not external, not the boot disk but very much a part of the perminate system.!??!!

sometimes on post the cpu isn't recognized.

well thats it for now, please feel free to carry on with this threads proper subject, but avoid this mobo unless you enjoy the paranormal :D

Get the asus one it's all good the abit one is nice but has overclocking issues and will only take 2 sticks of ram.

Try the biostar Tforce 6100 socket 754 version. Absolutely rock solid board, clocks like a good'un, very stable and is damn cheap at £45inc vat.

running my venice core amd 3000+ 64 skt 754 at 2500mhz 24/7. Set vcore to 1.55v (gives actual 1.50v) 10multix250HTT, x3HT, 2x1gig corsair value at 166mhz divider. Sweet as a nut, idles at 27c, prime loaded after 4 hours 42c.

Asrock now make a 754 SLI rig using the ULI M1697

little or no penalty for getting SLI capability and its cheap which means your not throwing a lot of money into the older 754 cpu format.

I'm actually in a similar situation. I need a pci express board for my 3400+ cpu. I don't need sli as I only intend to buy one x1800xt before upgrading properly with conroe or am2.

I need a board that can cope with the x1800xt at pe speeds and a slight overclock on the cpu (i intend to run it at 2.6ghz). A handfull of pci slots would also be helpfull.

What would you recommend?

Thanks

Currently playing with the asrock 754 SLI board and its running 2 6800GT's with no problems on a really poor PSU. Has 3 PCI 2 PCI-e graphics and 1PCIE X 1 slot and its cheap.

Asrock K8SLI-eSATA2 - its like 40 + postage in stock in the uk, can be upgraded to 939 and am2 :o - think it does xfire aswell lol

dunno how it will clock though
